UMass Takes Down Cardinals On Day Two Of The Louisville Classic
March 10, 2018 | Softball
The Minutewomen ended Louisville’s 10-game winning streak behind three hits and three RBI from Erin Stacevicz.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Erin Stacevicz went 3-of-4 at the plate with three RBI as the University of Massachusetts softball team ended a 10-game winning streak for Louisville with a 5-2 win in their final game of day two of the Louisville Classic on Saturday afternoon. The Minutewomen (9-8 Overall) bounced back with a win over the Cardinals after falling to Bradley in the opening game of the day, 6-5.
Game One – Bradley 6, UMass 5 - Box Score
The Minutewomen found themselves in a 5-0 hole after the first two innings as the Braves scored two in the first inning on a pair of hits and an error before adding three in the second.
Meg Colleran came into the game in relief of Quinn Breidenbach with two outs in the top of the second inning, allowing a hit on the first batter she faced before keeping Bradley without a base hit for the next 4.1 innings. Colleran finished the game with one run allowed in 5.1 innings of work while striking out three.
The UMass offense put leadoff runners on base in the first four innings, capitalizing for the first time in the third inning after a Jena Cozza RBI triple to score Jackie Kelley from first for the first run of the morning for the Minutewomen. Cozza reached base in all four at-bats, going 3-of-3 at the plate with three extra-base hits and a walk.
Erin Stacevicz followed with a RBI of her own, driving in Cozza on a double while forcing a throw that got away from the Bradley defense and allowed Stacevicz to score on the same play for the third run of the inning to bring the count of 5-3.
UMass loaded the bases in both the fourth and fifth innings, coming up empty handed the first time before Melissa Garcia drove in Hannah Bunker on a RBI single up the middle to cut the Bradley lead to one at 5-4. Garcia's second hit of the day saw the junior drive in the final run of the morning for UMass, scoring Madison Gimpl from second with two outs to pull back within one after Bradley added their sixth in the top half of the inning.
Game Two – UMass 5, Louisville 2 - Box Score
UMass fell behind Louisville (17-5 Overall) in the second inning after surrendering an unearned run before an Amy Smith diving grab at second base helped the Minutewomen end the frame on a double play and kept the Cardinal lead at one run.
Caroline Videtto earned a one-out walk in the following inning as UMass responded with three runs to go ahead 3-1. Cozza singled before Stacevicz's second hit of the game tied it up at 1-1 by scoring Videtto before Kaycee Carbone drove in the second run on one of her two base hits. UMass went on to add a run on an error to grab a two-run advantage.
Kiara Oliver and the UMass defense came out of the bottom of the third inning unscathed as Louisville loaded the bases with no outs in the inning before two plays at the plate and a strikeout left the bases juiced. Oliver moved her record on the season to 5-1, striking out three and allowing just one earned run in the win.
After Louisville pulled within a run in the bottom of the fourth, UMass came back in the sixth inning and extended their lead to three at 5-2. Stacevicz's third and final hit of the game brought in a pinch-running Riley Gregoire after Amy Smith's one-out single and a Cozza hit-by-pitch with two outs set up a two-RBI triple off the wall in left.
In addition to ending Louisville's 10-game winning streak, UMass also became the first team this season to beat the Cardinals at home through the first 11 games.
The Minutewomen wrap up the Louisville Classic tomorrow with a rematch against Eastern Michigan at 10 a.m.
