UMass Heads To Kentucky For Louisville Softball Classic

Weekend play opens up with a pair of contests on Friday against Eastern Michigan and host Louisville.
AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts softball team continues their non-conference tournament slate this weekend as they travel to Louisville, Ky. this weekend for five games at the Louisville Classic. The Minutewomen (7-6 Overall) head into the weekend as winners of six of their last eight contests after going 2-2 last weekend at the Diamond 9 Citrus Classic.
UMass will open up the Louisville Classic with a pair of games on Friday, beginning with Eastern Michigan at 12 p.m. before taking on host Louisville at the newly scheduled time of 4 p.m. Saturday's slate begins at 10 a.m. against Bradley followed another matchup against Louisville at 3 p.m. with the tournament wrapping up with a rematch against Eastern Michigan on Sunday morning.
Kaycee Carbone led the offense with eight RBI and two home runs last time out on her way to being named the Atlantic 10 Player of the Week, the second UMass player to do so this season as Jena Cozza won the award two weeks ago. Carbone and Cozza each homered on the opening day as UMass split a pair of games, defeating Delaware 9-5 to wrap up play on Friday.
Cozza finished the weekend as the nation's leader in home runs per game with 0.62 and slugging-percentage with a 1.154 clip while ranking sixth in total home runs and seventh in runs per game. The senior leads the A-10 in seven different offensive categories while leading the Minutewomen in eight categories, including batting average, total bases and on-base percentage. Cozza moved up the UMass career home run leaders list with her two homers, claiming sole possession of fourth-most all-time with 29 in her career.
The UMass offense posted a season-high 15 hits with eight batters reaching base safely in a 7-3 Sunday win over UC Santa Barbara led by multi-hit performances from Cozza, Erin Stacevicz, Hannah Bunker and Jackie Kelley. On the season, UMass is hitting .278 as a team with 70 runs scored and 62 RBI compared to a .243 average with 35 runs and 28 RBI a year ago through the first 13 games.
Kiara Oliver earned the win over the Gauchos in the circle to move to 3-1 on the season, striking out a career-high 10 batters. Oliver leads the league in strikeouts and strikeouts per seven innings through eight appearances and 38.1 innings pitched this season.
