UMass Wraps Up Non-Conference Tournament Play At St. John’s

The Minutewomen open up the weekend with a Saturday doubleheader against Binghamton and Boston University.
AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts softball team is set for a pair of games on both Saturday and Sunday as they wrap up their non-conference tournament schedule this weekend at the St. John's Invite in Jamaica, N.Y. The Minutewomen (9-8 Overall) open up the tournament against Binghamton and Hofstra on Saturday morning before taking on Boston University and host St. John's on Sunday afternoon.
Saturday's slate opens up with Binghamton (3-6 Overall) at 11 a.m. at Red Storm Field followed by a road matchup at Hofstra (10-7 Overall) at 3 p.m. on their home field at Bill Edwards Stadium. UMass wraps up the weekend on Sunday, beginning with a contest against in-state foe Boston University (8-12 Overall) at 11 a.m. at Hofstra followed by a 3 p.m. Sunday contest against host St. John's (5-16 Overall) on ESPN3.
UMass went 2-2 last time out at the Louisville Classic, capping off the weekend by ending the Cardinals' 10-game winning streak with a 5-2 win on Saturday afternoon. Kiara Oliver earned the win and improved to 5-1 in the circle on the season as she was named the Atlantic 10 Co-Pitcher of the Week for the first time in her career after a 2-0 weekend. Oliver remains the league's strikeout leader with 56 in 52.1 innings pitched during her freshman campaign while ranking second in strikeouts per seven innings.
On the season, UMass is led by Jena Cozza's .471 average at the plate with a team-leading 22 runs and eight home runs. The senior leads the A-10 in seven offensive categories and ranks in the top-five nationally in home runs per game (0.47), runs per game (1.29) and slugging percentage (1.098). Cozza continues her climb up the UMass record books, moving up a spot into third all-time in both career batting average (.391) and on base-percentage (.475) while remaining second in career slugging-percentage (.702). Last weekend also moved Cozza into the top-20 all-time at UMass in total bases, currently ranking 14th with 278 and three bases behind 13th all-time.
Kaycee Carbone adds a .375 batting average with a team-best 19 RBI for a team that owns a .284 team batting average through 17 games played. Erin Stacevicz improved her batting average on the season to .356 after a .429 showing at the plate last weekend with three extra-base hits and four RBI. As a team, the Minutewomen have outscored their opponents by 21 runs and have driven in 23 more runs than their competition in head-to-head matchups.
