UMass Splits Saturday Doubleheader, Downs Binghamton 12-9

March 17, 2018 | Softball

The Minutewomen split a pair of games on Saturday, defeating Binghamton 12-9 behind four multi-hit performers.

QUEENS, N.Y. Jena Cozza drove in four runs on three hits as the University of Massachusetts softball team opened up Saturday with a 12-9 win over Binghamton before falling to Hofstra 2-0 in a doubleheader split at the St. John's Invite. The Minutewomen (10-9 Overall) racked up 11 hits in the win over the Bearcats as four different batters recorded multi-hit games while three picked up two or more RBI.

Game One – UMass 12, Binghamton 9 - Box Score
UMass used the long ball in the opening frame to take a 2-0 lead, beginning with Cozza's ninth home run of the year on the very first pitch of the game before Kaycee Carbone hit her fifth of the season two batters later. Cozza's homer was the 30th of her career, moving her within two of tying Samantha Salato (2006-09) for third-most all-time.

Cozza came through at the plate in the following inning with her second of three hits on the game, clearing the bases with a three-RBI double to clear the bases and put UMass ahead 5-0. The senior finished with four RBI and three runs scored to go along with a pair of walks.

Binghamton (3-7 Overall) answered with three runs in the bottom half of the second inning as they went on to plate six unanswered runs to go ahead 6-5 after three complete innings.

Carbone picked up her second RBI of the day in the top of the fourth inning, driving in a run while another scored on an error to put UMass up 8-6.

The Bearcats brought in two unearned runs with two outs in the bottom of the fifth to tie things up at 8-8 as Binghamton scored five of their first eight runs with two outs. Binghamton went on to score their ninth and final run of the afternoon on a passed ball in the bottom of the seventh.

UMass sealed the win with a four-run seventh inning, plating two runs on an error during Hannah Bunker's at-bat before Kaitlyn Stavinoha added two more to the scoreboard on her second hit of the day with a two-RBI triple to put UMass ahead by four on their way to a 12-9 win.

Meg Colleran picked up the win to move to 3-3 on the year, tossing 3.2 innings of one earned run softball. Kiara Oliver entered in relief with runners on second and third and no outs in the seventh inning, picking up her first career save while striking out a pair of batters.

Game Two – Hofstra 2, UMass 0 - Box Score
Game two started as a pitchers' duel between UMass' Oliver and Hofstra's Sarah Cornell as both offenses had two hits each through the first four innings while the hurlers combined for 13 strikeouts heading into the fifth inning.

Oliver tossed 6.0 innings and struck out six batters, leaving runners stranded in scoring position for Hofstra (12-7 Overall) in each of the first four innings to keep the score knotted at 0-0. The Pride finally broke through with their first hit with runners on through 13 attempts, their first with runners in scoring position after going 0-10, driving in the only runs of the afternoon on a pinch-hit two-run home run by Kimberly Wert with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning to put Hofstra ahead 2-0.

Carbone picked up her third hit of the day while Madison Gimpl added another hit for a UMass team that had just two hits to Hofstra's five. Cozza reached base twice on a walk and a hit-by-pitch, taking over the third spot for most hit-by-pitches in program history with 30 in her career.

The Minutewomen return to action tomorrow morning with a matchup against in-state foe Boston University at 11 a.m. at Hofstra's Bill Edwards Stadium before taking on host St. John's at 3 p.m. on ESPN3.
