A-10 Championship Up Next For Softball

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts softball (26-22, 13-6 Atlantic 10), as the No. 2 seed, will compete at the Atlantic 10 Championship this week in Fairfax, Virginia. Hosted by George Mason, the Minutewomen received a first-round bye and will play the winner of No. 3 Saint Joseph's and No. 6 George Mason on Friday at 12:30 p.m.

Massachusetts has collected 26 wins for the second-straight season. After starting 3-14, UMass finished the season 23-8 (since March 11) and won six of its seven Atlantic 10 series. The Minutewomen combined for a .272 batting average and a 3.15 ERA overall with improved averages of .315 and 3.07, respectively, in conference play.

A Look Back
UMass traveled to Dayton for a three-game series on Saturday and Sunday, May 6-7. On Saturday, the Minutewomen won game one, 6-3, and lost 11-3 in game two on Saturday. On Sunday, UMass fell 3-2. Junior Meg Colleran picked up her 17th win of the season this weekend.

Among the league teams, UMass ranks No. 4 in batting average (.272), No. 4 in hits (353), No. 5 in triples (7), No. 5 in stolen bases (59), No. 5 in batters struck out (219) and No. 3 in opposing batting average (.243).

Colleran ranks No. 5 in opposing batting average (.233) and No. 2 in wins (17). Sophomore Kaitlyn Stavinoha leads the Atlantic 10 in assists with 127. Freshman Candace Denis ranks No. 3 opposing batting average (.221) and No. 2 among rookies. Going 24-for-27 in stolen bases, she ranks No. 3 overall and leads all rookies.

Scouting The Opponent
Massachusetts will play the winner of No. 3 Saint Joseph's and No. 6 George Mason in the second round on Thursday. Those two teams play Wednesday at 2:30 p.m.
The Minutewomen bested the Hawks, 1-0 and 3-1, in a doubleheader April 22-23. SJU finished the season 23-26 overall and 14-8 in Atlantic 10 play. UMass didn't play George Mason in the regular season but the Patriots posted records of 21-31 overall and 12-11 in league action.
