Minutewomen Grind Past Hawks, 2-1
May 12, 2017 | Softball
AMHERST, Mass. – Behind seven strikeouts from junior right hander Meg Colleran, University of Massachusetts softball (27-22) took a 2-1 victory from third-seeded Saint Joseph's (24-27) in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic 10 Championship on Friday. Second-seeded UMass will face top-seeded Fordham (43-14) at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the George Mason Softball Complex.
Colleran threw a gem, striking out seven batters and giving up only five hits, all singles. As the Hawks left seven runners on base, Colleran walked just two batters. She advanced to 18-12 on the season.
In the bottom of the second, senior Tara Klee singled to center field. Senior Ashton Wince followed that up with a double to the left field line. Freshman Madison Gimpl, earning her 13th career start in left field, knocked a single to shallow center field to drive in the pair of runs.
Saint Joseph's immediately threatened in the top third, plating a run on a sacrifice fly, cutting the UMass lead to 2-1. The score stood for the final frames of the contest.
Freshman Candace Denis stole her 25th base of the season, pushing her mark to 25-of-28. She now ranks tied for fifth for stolen bases in a season, matching Candice Molinari's same mark from 2006, and leads all-time UMass freshmen.
