Minutewomen, Flyers Split Doubleheader

May 06, 2017 | Softball

AMHERST, Mass. University of Massachusetts softball (26-21, 13-5 Atlantic 10) split a doubleheader at Dayton (28-25, 12-10 A-10) on Saturday, May 6. The game one win is No. 26 on the season for the Minutewomen, matching 2016's win total and the best for Kristi Stefanoni as head coach.

Game One
UMass defeated Dayton, 6-3, in game one on Saturday. Junior Meg Colleran started on the mound and pitched a full seven innings, striking out three batters and giving up just four hits.

The Minutewomen picked up a total of 11 hits, paced by sophomore Kaitlyn Stavinoha's 3-for-5 outing at the plate with two RBI. Sophomores Erin Stacevicz and Kaycee Carbone and senior Tara Klee each picked up two hits, and seniors Jena Cozza and Ashton Wince earned themselves singles.

Game Two
The Minutewomen fell, 11-3 (5), to Dayton in game two. Colleran started again in the circle and pitched two innings and freshman Candace Denis came in for 2.1 innings of relief shortly after.

UMass took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first when Stacevicz scored on a single by Cozza to open the first frame. Carbone singled to left center to send Cozza across the plate but the Flyers fired back and capitalized on bases loaded with a grand slam, taking a 4-2 lead.

Dayton continued to put pressure on the Minutewomen, scoring another seven runs throughout five-inning game. Stavinoha, Denis and freshman Madison Gimpl each picked up a hit but we were unable to produce any more runs.

UMass and Dayton will conclude the series Sunday at 12 p.m.
