Seniors Propel UMass Past La Salle in Seventh

April 29, 2017 | Softball

AMHERST, Mass. University of Massachusetts softball (23-20, 11-4 Atlantic 10) split Saturday's doubleheader with La Salle (19-23, 7-12 A-10) at Sortino Field. The Minutewomen dropped game one, 6-5, and picked up a victory over the Explorers in game two, 6-5. Caitlyn Hickey, Tara Klee and Ashton Wince were honored in a Senior Day ceremony before the first pitch.

Game One
Massachusetts dropped game, 6-5. Junior Meg Colleran started on the mound and pitched 5.1 innings, striking out four batters and giving up nine hits. Freshman Candace Denis pitched 1.2 innings, giving up two hits.

Sophomore Kaitlyn Stavinoha got up to the plate with two runners on and two outs in the bottom of the third. She hit a perfectly-placed double just a foot beside the left field line, giving UMass the 2-1 lead as she drove in sophomore Erin Stacevicz and freshman Candace Denis.

In the bottom of the fourth, sophomore Kaycee Carbone blasted a double to right field and Klee's sacrifice fly drove her home. Wince and Hickey produced back-to-back doubles to right center, earning Hickey an RBI and closing the gap 6-5. UMass was unable to plate runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Game Two
The Minutewomen bested the Explorers, 6-5. Denis (8-8) started in the circle and earned herself a win, striking out eight batters and giving up six hits.

UMass took an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third. Stavinoha ripped a single to left, moving Stacevicz to second to set up senior Jena Cozza for her third home run of the season. La Salle answered back with a three-run homer but UMass regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth when Klee's RBI double scored Carbone.

The Explorers took a 5-4 lead in the top of the seventh. Klee led off with a triple to deep center and Wince doubled over the left fielder's head for the tying run. Hickey's single advanced Wince to third and Denis walked to load the bases for Stacevicz's game-winning RBI single.

UMass will face La Salle on Sunday at 12 p.m. for the final game of the series.
