Minutewomen, Explorers Meet at Sortino Field

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts softball (22-19, 10-3 Atlantic 10) will host a three-game series with La Salle (18-22, 6-11 Atlantic 10) Saturday and Sunday, April 29-30, at Sortino Field. Game times are slated for 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday's finale will start at 12 p.m.
Caitlyn Hickey, Tara Klee and Ashton Wince will be honored during a Senior Day ceremony prior to first pitch on Saturday.
A Look Back
Massachusetts leads the Atlantic 10 standings after sweeping Saint Joseph's in a doubleheader April 22-23. The Minutewomen took 1-0 and 3-1 victories from the Hawks. Junior Meg Colleran picked up two more wins, pitching a total of 14 innings and striking out four batters. UMass was set to play Connecticut and Boston College Tuesday and Wednesday this week but games were cancelled due to inclement weather.
Atlantic 10 Roundup
As a squad, Massachusetts ranks No. 3 in team pitching with a 2.88 ERA and No. 2 in opposing batting average with a .231. The Minutewomen are No. 5 in team batting average (.262) and No. 5 in stolen bases (53). Freshman Candace Denis leads the league in opposing batting average (.202) and is No. 4 in the league in stolen bases with 21. Colleran is No. 2 in wins (14) and No. 5 in opposing batting average (.229).
The Explorers
La Salle fell to Saint Joseph's in a doubleheader on Thurs., April 27. Sophomore Marlo Roadcap and freshman Reilly Gearhart split time in the circle. Gearhart has a 3.82 ERA, throwing 84.1 innings and striking out 58 batters. Roadcap has pitched 114.2 innings, striking out 134 batters with a .277 opposing batting average. Senior Suzanne Swanicke leads the Explorers' offense with a .319 batting average, picking up 30 hits, 28 RBI, five home runs, seven doubles and 14 runs scored.
Jena Cozza's Comeback
After missing the first 29 games of the season, Jena Cozza was named the Atlantic 10 Co-Player of the Week on April 17. She currently paces the Minutewomen's offense with a .457 batting average and led UMass to two victories at Saint Joseph's, going four-for-six and batting .667 with three RBI.
Colleran Honored By League
The junior from North Attleboro, Massachusetts was named the Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week on April 24. Colleran went 3-0 in the circle to pace UMass softball to a 3-1 week (April 18-23). She posted wins over Boston College (2-1) and Saint Joseph's (1-0, 3-1), giving up just one earned run and walking only two batters in 21 innings pitched. She struck out 11 batters total, including seven at Boston College on Wednesday, and posted an ERA of 0.33. She pitched a double header, over Saturday and Sunday, at Saint Joseph's, allowing one earned run while walking only one in 14 innings pitched. Colleran struck out four Hawks.
In The Circle
Colleran (14-9) and Denis (7-8) are splitting a majority of the starts for UMass. Colleran has an ERA of 2.57 in 22 starts and 17 complete games (141.2 total innings). Denis has an ERA of 2.53 in 16 starts and 12 complete games (108.0 total innings).
Sophomore Studs
Kaitlyn Stavinoha bats No. 2 on the team with a .366 batting average, 32 RBI and one home run. Kaycee Carbone sits at No. 5 on the squad with a batting average of .289, 33 hits and ties Cozza with two homeruns. Erin Stacevicz's .326 batting average is good for No. 3 on the team with 47 hits and 29 runs scored.
