Minutewomen Take Game Three From Explorers, 5-4
April 30, 2017 | Softball
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts softball (24-20, 12-4 Atlantic 10) defeated La Salle (19-24, 7-13 A-10), 5-4, on Sunday, April 30. Senior Ashton Wince and sophomore Erin Stacevicz each contributed with two RBI. Senior Jena Cozza, going 2-for-3 at the plate, homered for the second-straight game.

Freshman Candace Denis started in the circle and pitched 1.2 innings, giving up three runs. Junior Meg Colleran relieved Denis and pitched 5.1 innings, striking out six and giving up just one run.

La Salle took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second into a 45-minute rain delay. Colleran closed out the frame after the pause in action to bring senior Ashton Wince and Denis to the plate, eventually reaching base. Stacevicz tripled, scoring both runners, to cut the lead to one run.

In the bottom of the third, Cozza's home run, her fourth of the season, tied the game at three. Sophomore Melissa Garcia reached on an error and senior Tara Klee double to left center to advance the pair. Wince reached base on an error to score Garcia, giving UMass a 4-3 lead.

La Salle tied the game at four in the top of the fifth but the Minutewomen answered back immediately when Garcia scored again, thanks to a Wince single, in the bottom of the fifth. The score remained for the final frames.

UMass will play at Bryant on Tuesday, May 2, at 2 p.m.
