Minutewomen Defeat Samford, Battle Central Arkansas in Extra Innings

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts softball started off the day strong with a convincing 13-0 victory over Samford and put up an extra-inning fight against Central Arkansas, falling 2-1. The Minutewomen are set to rematch Samford on Sunday at 11 a.m. CT/12 p.m. ET.
Game One
The Minutewomen dominated Samford with a crushing 13-0 victory for the first game of the day. Freshman Candace Denis started in the circle and pitched a five-inning shutout, giving up only one hit. She also struck out seven batters.
UMass had a stellar performance at the plate, racking up a total of 15 hits. The Minutewomen scored one run in the first and two in the third. In the fifth inning, the bats came alive again, blasting eight hits and scoring 10 runs.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Stavinoha went four-for-four with four RBI and three runs scored. Sophomore Erin Stacevicz and freshman Candace Denis both went three-for-four and scored three runs, and freshman Nicole Imhof picked up two hits and knocked in two RBI. Sophomores Kaycee Carbone and Melissa Garcia and senior Ashton Wince were also credited with singles.
Game Two
The Minutewomen lost 2-1 in a heartbreaking 11-inning game against Central Arkansas. Freshman Candace Denis started in the circle again and pitched 10.1 innings, striking out nine batters (a team and individual pitcher single-game high this season) and giving up only three hits.
After seven complete innings, the game remained scoreless, sending both teams into extra innings. In the eighth and ninth, neither teams was able to produce a run, so the tie breaker rule went into effect and a runner was placed on second base to start the following inning.
Garcia, who went two-for-two, singled up the middle to drive in Wince and give UMass a 1-0 lead. The Bears retaliated in the bottom of the 10th with a run and followed up again in the 11th inning to win the game.
