Minutewomen Fall to San Jose State, UC Davis

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts softball faced San Jose State and UC Davis on day one of the Aggie Invitational I. The Minutewomen fell to San Jose State, 3-0, in their first game of the day and lost 3-2 to UC Davis after a 10-inning battle. On Saturday, UMass will face Seton Hall at 1:15 p.m. PT/4:15 p.m. ET and UC Davis at 3:15 p.m. PT/6:15 p.m. ET.
Game One
The Minutewomen fell to San Jose State, 3-0, in their first game on Friday. Junior Meg Colleran started in the circle, allowing seven hits and three runs. Colleran struck out three batters over the course of seven innings. The Aggies scored runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
Senior Ashton Wince, sophomore Melissa Garcia and freshman Kate Denis went one-for-three. Freshman Candace Dennis went one-for-two at the plate.
Game Two
UMass fell 3-2 in a heartbreaking 10-inning battle with UC Davis. Denis started on the mound and pitched 9.2 innings, giving up three runs and striking out two batters.
Sophomore Kaycee Carbone blasted a homerun in the top of the second inning to give UMass the 1-0. UC Davis retaliated in the bottom of the third by posting a single run, tying the game.
In the top of the eighth, the tiebreaker rule was in effect and sophomore Erin Stacevicz was placed on second. She advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored with the help of a single from sophomore Kaitlyn Stavinoha, who went two-for-four.
UC Davis came back in the bottom of the eighth and scored on a fielder's choice, tying the game. After two scoreless innings, UC Davis was able to reach on a fielder's error, ending the game 3-2.
