Minutewomen Travel For Baylor Invitational

AMHERST, Mass. Head coach Kristi Stefanoni and University of Massachusetts softball continue the 2017 campaign, February 24-26, at the Baylor Invitational. The Minutewomen will play gave games over three days in Waco, Texas.
 
UMass will open Friday with Saint Francis at 12:30 p.m. and Baylor at 5:30 p.m. On Saturday, the Minutewomen face SIU Edwardsville at 12:30 p.m. and will move on to bracket play with games set for 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. The weekend wraps with a consolation game at 9:30 a.m. or the championship game at 12 p.m., seeding to be determined.
 
The Minutewomen are coming off a 2-3 season-opening weekend at the EMU Madeira Beach Invitational. They cinched victories against Robert Morris and Siena but fell to Southern Illinois, Central Michigan, and Oakland. Sophomores Erin Stacevicz (18 at bats) and Kaitlyn Stavinoha (16 at bats) were key offensive leaders, posting batting averages of .444 and .438, respectively.
 
Junior right-handed pitcher Meg Colleran earned her first win of the season on the mound against Robert Morris, striking out four batters and earning a complete game shut-out. Freshman lefty Maddie Sadler made her collegiate debut in the circle vs. Robert Morris and picked up her first win of the season with an 8-5 victory.
 
About Saint Francis
UMass will meet Saint Francis (8-2) on Friday at 12:30 p.m. The Red Flash opened their season at the Fairfield Inn and Suites Invitational with a 4-1 record, followed by another 4-1 record at the Pirate Clash. Sophomore Cheyenne McKey leads SFU's offense with a .433 average, picking up 13 hits and driving in four RBI. Junior Jordan Seneca holds a .333 average with four homeruns and nine RBI. Freshman Abby Trahan leads the pitching efforts, picking up four wins, striking out 29 batters and maintaining a 1.95 ERA.
 
About Baylor
UMass will meet host Baylor (7-3) on Friday at 5:30 p.m. The Bears began their season at the Hillenbrand Invitational with a 3-2 record, followed by a 4-1 record at their own Getterman Classic. Senior Kelsee Selman picked up the bulk of the pitching responsibilities, earning four wins and two losses while striking out 26 batters and maintaining an ERA of 1.18. Sophomore Kyla Walker leads the Baylor offense with a .600 batting average, picking up 18 hits and driving in eight RBI.
 
About SIU Edwardsville
UMass will face SIU Edwardsville (8-2) on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. The Cougars opened 2017 at the Mardi Gras Classic (Louisiana-Monroe) and the Plainsman Invitational, hosted by Auburn. Freshman Conner Cutright leads the squad with a .438 batting average, opening the season going 7-for-16 at the plate. In the circle, senior Haley Chambers-Book holds a 5-1 record with a 1.21 ERA.
 
A Look Back to 2016
In 2016, the Minutewomen won 16 of their last 20 games, including six shutouts, two of which came to open the Atlantic 10 Championship. Originally picked seventh in the preseason poll, the Minutewomen finished third in the regular-season standings and at the Atlantic 10 Championship. The 26 wins and 15 conference victories set team bests for head coach Kristi Stefanoni's three campaigns as the program leader.
 
Preseason Predictions
Massachusetts softball is predicted to finish fourth in the 2017 Atlantic 10 standings. Fordham was predicted to win the league title, followed by Dayton and in third place, Saint Joseph's.
 
Home Sweet Home
UMass plays its first regular-season home games March 25 and 26, hosting St. Bonaventure, at Sortino Field. Admission for the 2017 softball home slate is free for all fans.
 
In The Circle
Junior Meg Colleran returns to in 2017 looking to lead the pitching staff. Last season, Colleran threw seven complete game shut-outs and racked up 125 strikeouts. She's joined by freshmen Quinn Breidenbach, Candace Denis and Maddie Sadler who all show potential in relief.
 
Swing Away
The Minutewomen return five starters from the 2016 lineup: Erin Stacevicz, Kaycee Carbone, Tara Klee, Kaitlyn Stavinoha and Ashton Wince. They combined for 192 hits last season.
 
Sophomore Studs
UMass returns sophomore pair Erin Stacevicz (OF) and Kaitlyn Stavinoha (INF) for the 2017 season. The duo shined as true freshmen in 2016 as both started all 50 games at their respective positions. Stacevicz racked up 59 hits and seven stolen bases while Stavinoha was credited with 15 RBI and was 4-for-4 in stolen base attempts.
 
Title Time
The 2017 Atlantic 10 Softball Championship will be hosted by George Mason, May 10-13, at the George Mason Softball Complex, in Fairfax, Va.
