Minutewomen Conclude at EMU Madeira Beach Invitational

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts softball fell to Oakland, 2-1, in their final game of the EMU Madeira Beach Invitational on Sunday. The Minutewomen concluded their first tournament of the season with a 2-3 record.
Junior Meg Colleran started on the mound and pitched the entire game, striking out five batters and walking one while giving up five hits.
In the top of the third, senior Caitlyn Hickey and freshman Candace Denis started off the frame with singles to put themselves in scoring position. Sophomore Kaitlyn Stavinoha singled to centerfield, driving in a run and giving UMass the 1-0 lead. Oakland answered back by scoring a run in the bottom of the third, tying up the game.
A sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth gave Oakland a 2-1 lead. Despite a single by sophomore Erin Stacevicz in the top of the seventh, the Minutewomen were unable to rally and put a run on the board.
UMass will play at the Baylor Invitational, Feb. 24-26, in Waco, Texas. On Friday, the squad will face St. Francis at 12:30 p.m. and Baylor at 5:30 p.m.
