February 17, 2017 | Softball
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts softball opened the 2017 season with back-to-back victories on day one of the EMU Madeira Beach Invitational. The Minutewomen are 2-0, thanks to wins over Robert Morris and Siena on Friday.
"I was very pleased with day one and we came out to compete," head coach Kristi Stefanoni said. "We had a couple mistakes that we'll learn from but, overall, we are all very happy with two wins."
Game One
UMass earned its first win of the season, 2-0, against Robert Morris in game one of Friday's slate. The Minutewomen produced eight hits while junior right-handed pitcher Meg Colleran earned a shutout, striking out four and allowing three hits.
The game was scoreless until the top of the fourth when freshman Candace Denis started off the inning with a single to shortstop. Sophomore Erin Stacevicz then drove Denis in with a single up the middle to put UMass on the board, leading Robert Morris 1-0.
Senior Tara Klee went two-for-four with an RBI double to drive in UMass' second run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Game Two
The Minutewomen put up a fight against Siena and pulled out an 8-5 victory in extra innings. Freshmen Quinn Breidenbach and Maddie Sadler made their collegiate debuts in the circle. Breidenbach earned the start as Sadler came on in relief to earn the decision.
In the top of the second inning, freshman Nicole Imhof doubled to left center to knock in the first run of the game. Siena struck with a two-run homer, taking a 2-1 lead.
In the top of the fifth, UMass scored three runs to take a 4-2 lead, with the help of singles by Stacevicz, sophomore Kaitlyn Stavinoha and freshman Madison Gimpl. Siena took to the scoreboard again with two homers to tie it up, sending the game to extra innings.
Three hits from the Minutewomen in the top of the eighth opened the floodgates and gave UMass an 8-4 lead. Stavinoha scored two runs, going 3-for-4 with an RBI.
UMass will continue tournament play on Saturday at 9 a.m. vs. Southern Illinois and vs. Central Michigan at 2 p.m.
