Softball Falls to Southern Illinois, Central Michigan

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts softball fell to Southern Illinois and Central Michigan on day two of the EMU Madeira Beach Invitational. The Minutewomen (2-2) will wrap play in Madeira Beach, Fla. facing Oakland University at 9 a.m. Sunday.
Game One
UMass fell to Southern Illinois, 7-0, in its first game of the day on Saturday. Junior right-handed pitcher Meg Colleran started the game and was able to fend off the Salukis' offense for three innings until they posted seven runs in the bottom of the fourth. Freshman Quinn Breidenbach came on in relief of Colleran, pitching 2.2 innings and striking out two batters.
Sophomore Kaycee Carbone went two-for-three at the plate. Erin Stacevicz, Tara Klee and Nicole Imhof also each logged hits during the contest.
Game Two
The Minutewomen suffered an 11-0 loss to Central Michigan in game two of the day. Freshman Maddie Sadler started her first game of the season and pitched 1.2 innings. The Chippewas were able to put four runs on the board in the second, forcing a UMass pitching change.
Freshman Quinn Breidenbach returned to the mound for 3.1 innings. When Central Michigan posted another six runs, freshman Candace Denis moved from shortstop to pitch the last inning and end the game.
UMass picked up four hits throughout the course of the six innings. Kaitlyn Stavinoha and Ashton Wince produced two singles and Stacevicz went two-for-three.
