Henderson Picks Up 200th Win As Softball Splits Doubleheader With Buffalo

With the victory, Minutewomen Head Coach Danielle Henderson picked up her 200th career coaching victory.
Keefe stayed hot at the plate, recording two hits in each contest, including the walk-off single in the second game. Keefe knocked in four RBI's, setting a career-high.
Game One
UMass 4, Buffalo 21
In the opening game of the day, the Bulls offense exploded for a season-high 21 runs on 23 hits, crusing to a 6-inning mercy victory. In the loss, Keefe led the offense with two hits, with Brooke Musch, Odyssey Torres, Lillie Scheivert, Katharine Heslin and Tiegan Walsh each adding hits of their own.
The Bulls got to work early, plating three runs in the bottom of the first. After a leadoff walk and infield single, Buffalo's Bella Smithson homered to deep centerfield to take an early 3-0 lead. Consecutive hits with one out threatened to add to the lead, but the Minutewomen's Olivia Cutuli was able to work out of the jam with no additional damage.
Buffalo tacked on four more runs in the top of the second on three hits, extending the lead to 7-0 in favor of the Bulls.
The Minutewomen responded in the bottom of the third inning, plating four to cut into the deficit. UMass hit four consecutive singles, with Scheivert and Helsin each being credited with an RBI to cut the game to 7-2. Lilly Woodworth walked to load the bases, and a Grace Colucci hit by pitch and Walsh groundout plated two more, bringing the game to 7-4.
Buffalo tallied two more runs in both the top of the fourth and fifth to extend the lead to 11-4, before plating 10 in the top of the sixth to take a 21-4 advantage.
Three consecutive groundouts in the bottom of the frame ended the game by mercy.
Olivia Cutuli (2-4) picked up the loss for the Minutewomen, allowing 12 runs on 13 hits, two walks and one strikeout in 3.0 innings. Eliana Raposo entered in relief, allowing nine runs on 10 hits, five walks and one strikeout in 3.0 innings. Olivia Russ (6-8) earned the win for the Bulls, allowing four runs on seven hits, five walks and two strikeouts in 6.0 innings.
Game Two
UMass 5, Buffalo 4
In the second game of the day, the Minutewomen came back to win in dramatic fashion, walking off the Bulls. Walsh, Keefe and Scheivert each registered multiple hits for the Minutewomen, with Walsh recording three hits and extending her hit-streak to five games.
Buffalo stayed hot to start the game, plating two early runs in the top of the first inning on four hits. The Minutewomen responded, as UMass opened the game with consecutive batters reaching by hit by pitches. Scheivert doubled down the left field line to score one and cut the score to 2-1.
Hannah Streicher retired the Bulls in order in the top of the second, punching out the final two batters for third strikeouts of the game.
In the top of the third, Buffalo hit three singles in four batters to score another run, taking a 3-1 lead.
The Minutewomen responded in the bottom of the fourth, as Colucci reach before Walsh blasted a double off the left center wall, putting two runners in scoring position with one out. Keefe grounded out to the right side of the infield, which was good enough to score Colucci and cut the lead to 3-2 for Buffalo.
In the bottom of the sixth, Keefe struck again, as with Woodworth and Walsh on base Keefe doubled to left center with two outs. Although being thrown out trying to extend to a triple, both runners scored to give the Minutewomen their first lead of the afternoon, 4-3.
The Bulls stayed alive in the top of the seventh, as consecutive singles and a passed ball to open the inning put two runners in scoring position for Buffalo. A sacrifice fly to right field tied the game at 4-4.
Neither team was able to score in the seventh, and in the top of the eighth, Streicher worked out of a two out jam. After walking a batter and allowing a single on the ensuing at bat, Streicher worked an infield lineout to hold the Bulls of the scoreboard.
In the bottom of the eighth, Woodworth started the Minutewomen rally with a leadoff single over second base. Raposo entered as a pinch runner, and following a Minutewoman strikeout, Walsh roped her second double of the game. Raposo attempted to score from second, but was thrown out at the plate.
With two outs, Keefe again came to bat, and connected on a 0-1 fastball to shallow right field. The hit was deep enough to score Walsh from second, and give the Minutewomen their 13th win of the season.
Streicher (8-9) picked up the win for the Minutewomen, allowing four runs on 11 hits, two walks and five strikeouts in 8.0 innings. Genevieve Longsdorf picked up the loss for the Bulls, allowing five runs on nine hits, five walks and one strikeout in 7.2 innings.
