Softball Splits Series Opener Doubleheader Against Central Michian

April 11, 2026 | Softball

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — The University of Massachusetts softball team (14-23, 6-11 MAC) split the first two games of a three contest series against Central Michigan (19-16, 10-6 MAC). After picking up a 5-3 victory in the opening game of the day, the Minutewomen fell 7-2 to end the day.

Hannah Streicher continued to stay hot, picking up her fourth consecutive win. Odyssey Torres extended her hit streak to seven games with three hits on the day.

The Minutewomen return to action for the final game of the rubber match taking place at 10 a.m.

Game One
UMass 5, Central Michigan 3

In the opening game of the day, the Minutewomen bats were on fire, racking up double-digit hits for the fifth time this season with 10. It marked the second straight contest UMass has tallied 10 hits.

Tiegan Walsh picked up where she left off after a three-hit performance in the third game against Buffalo on April 8, blasting two doubles. Lily Woodworth and Riley Kairer each had two hits, with the duo recording one double each. Riain Keefe, Odyssey Torres, Lillie Scheivert and Olivia Packard each added hits.

After the first nine combined batters were retired between the MAC foes, Central Michigan struck first in the bottom of the second. Consecutive doubles by the Chippewas scored a pair, with CMU taking an early 2-0 lead.

UMass responded quickly, as following a Woodworth single, Walsh found the left center gap to plate Woodworth and cut the deficit to 2-1.

Massachusetts continued to rally in top of the fourth. Kairer doubled and scored following a Packard single through the right side to knot the game at two. Woodworth doubled to plate another and Grace Colucci worked a walk before Walsh hit her second double of the game to extend a 4-2 Massachusetts lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, Central Michigan's Alexa Carter homered to right center to pull the Chips' within one, 4-3. Hannah Streicher surrendered a single in the following at-bat, before retiring the following three batters to end the inning.

In the top of the seventh, Keefe led off with a single through the middle. Brooke Musch worked a walk, and the duo advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch. Torres walked to load the bases with no outs. A fielders choice on the following at bat kept the Minuteowmen off the board, but a Kairer fly ball was deep enough to plate one. Central Michigan was able to limit the damage to just the one run, entering the bottom of the frame trailing 5-3.

Streicher forced a leadoff groundout in the bottom of the frame, before a CMU single brought the tying run to the plate. Woodworth stepped on second following a ground ball to record the second out. Scheivert picked a line drive out of the air to end the game for UMass.

Streicher (9-9) picked up her fourth-consecutive win, allowing just three runs on seven hits, four strikeouts and zero walks in 7.0 innings. Mackenzie Langan (6-8) was handed the loss for the Chippewas, allowing four runs (one earned) on seven hits, one walk and two strikeouts in 3.2 innings.

Game Two
UMass 2, Central Michigan 7

The Minutewomen bats fell cold in the second matchup of the afternoon, recording just five hits, with each coming from the top four batters in the lineup. Torres led the way with two hits including a double, with Keefe, Musch and Scheivert recording one. Packard reached in all three plate appearances drawing three walks.

UMass threatened to strike in the first, as Keefe slapped a leadoff single and later advanced to third on a single from Torres. Torres swiped second with ease to plate two runners in scoring position with one out. The Chippewas Brooklyn Compau was able to work out of the jam with consecutive strikeouts to end the top of the first.

Central Michigan struck first in the bottom of the fourth to break open the stalemate, plating five runs on eight hits to take a 5-0 advantage.

Massachusetts did not go down easy, as Musch singled through the middle for a leadoff hit, and Torres blasted a double to put two runners in scoring position with no outs. Scheivert scored Musch on a sacrifice fly to left field, and Torres scored on the ensuing at bat on a wild pitch to cut the score to 7-2. The run would prove to be the final in the contest, with CMU evening the series at 1-1.

Olivia Cutuli (2-5) picked up the loss for UMass, allowing seven runs on 12 hits, two walks and two strikeouts in 6.0 innings. Brooklyn Compau earned the win with a two run, five hit two walk and seven strikeout outing in 5.2 innings.
