March 27, 2026 | Softball
DEKALB, Ill — The University of Massachusetts softball team (8-18, 1-6 MAC) fell 3-2 to Northern Illinois (10-9, 4-3 MAC) in the first game of a three contest series on Friday.
The trio of Riain Keefe, Tiegan Walsh and Eliana Raposo combined for all three UMass hits, with Brooke Musch adding the two RBI's.
The matchup started in a stalemate, with the first baserunner not reaching until the bottom of the second, when Huskies Katy Ramage worked a leadoff walk, before UMass turned a double play on the ensuing at bat.
In the top of the third frame, Massachusetts opened the scoring. After consecutive singles from Walsh and Raposo, and a Keefe sacrifice bunt moved the runners into scoring position with two outs, a fielding error plated both runners, giving UMass a 2-0 lead.
The Huskies responded in the bottom of the fourth plating their first run to cut the deficit to 2-1.
In the bottom of the sixth, NIU tacked on two runs on two hits and a walk to take a 3-2 advantage.
The Minutewomen went down in order in the top of the seventh to hand NIU its 10th win of the season.
Hannah Streicher (4-8) picked up the loss for UMass, allowing three runs on seven hits, four walks and two strikeouts. Madison Carlson (4-0) continued to stay unbeaten on the season, allowing just two runs (zero earned) on three hits and seven strikeouts.
The Minutewomen return to action for a doubleheader against NIU to finish the weekend series, with the first game starting at 11 a.m.
