Softball Drops Two To Kent State In Conference Opener

KENT, Ohio — University of Massachusetts (7-14, 0-2 MAC) softball dropped two conference contests to Kent State (10-11, 2-0 MAC). The Golden Flashes secured a 3-2 walkoff victory in the opening game, before routing UMass for a 14-1 win in game two.
Riain Keefe led the offensive unit for the Minutewomen, recording three hits over the two games.
The Minutewomen return to action for the final contest of a three-game series against Kent State on Saturday, March 14 at noon.
Game One
UMass 2, Kent State 3
In the opening game of the day, Keefe picked up her sixth multi-hit game of the season with Brooke Musch, Lilly Woodworth, Lilly Scheivert and Tiegan Walsh each recording a hit for the Minutewomen. Walsh and Grace Culucci plated the two runs for UMass.
Kent State opened the scoring for the game, with Aaralyn Nogay working a walk, stealing second and later reaching third before scoring on a sacrifice fly to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
The Golden Flashes tacked on another run in the bottom of the third to take an early 2-0 lead.
The Minutewomen responded in the top of the fourth. Following a Woodworth walk and Scheivert hit to open the inning, consecutive ground outs were enough to plate Woodworth and cut the deficit to 2-1.
In the top of the sixth, UMass knotted the game at 2-2. With Eliana Raposo pinch running for Scheivert, Walsh beat out an infield single to score Raposo. Hannah Streicher held off the Golden Flashes in the bottom of the sixth, retiring the side heading into the seventh.
After Keefe beat out an infield single to open the top of the seventh, a groundout and double play ended the beginning of the frame. The Golden Flashes scored on three consecutive errors to earn a walk off win.
Streicher (3-6) took the loss for the Minutewomen, allowing just three runs (two earned), four hits, one walk and three strikeouts in 6.0 innings. Riley Miller (6-4) picked up the win for Kent State, recording six hits, two runs (one earned), three walks and two strikeouts in a full 7.0 innings.
Game Two
UMass 1, Kent State 14
In the second game of the day, Raposo picked up her first multi-hit game wearing the Maroon and White, as Keefe, Musch, Woodworth and Olivia Packard also added hits. Musch scored the lone run for UMass.
Kent State came out of the gates hot, scoring one in the bottom of the first on a leadoff homer, before exploding for 10 runs in the second to take a commanding 11-0 lead.
The Golden Flashes tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fourth to extend their lead to 14-0.
The Minutewomen didn't go down easy, as following Raposo's second hit of the game, a Brooke Musch triple scored Raposo from first. The run proved to be the only one for UMass, falling 14-1.
Kelsey Blanchette (2-7) took the loss for the Minutewomen, allowing seven runs on four hits, three walks and no strikeouts in 1.0 inning of work. Olivia Cutuli entered in relief, allowing seven runs, six hits, three walks and three strikeouts in 2.2 innings. Meadow Ferri (1-2) picked up the win for Kent State, allowing one run on six hits, no walks and two strikeouts in 5.0 innings.
