Softball Falls 7-0 To Illinois State

Madeira Beach, Fla. — University of Massachusetts softball fell to Illinois State, 7-0, in the final game of the Make It Happen Games. UMass falls to 7-12, while the Redbirds improve to 10-6.
Brooke Musch and Riain Keefe led the offensive unit for the Minutewomen, with Musch going a perfect 3-3 from the plate and Keefe adding two hits of her own. Lily Woodworth reached twice for Massachusetts with a single and a walk.
Illinois State got on the board first in the opening frame, with a trio of singles and wild pitches to take an early 2-0 lead. UMass narrowly responded in the bottom of the inning, opening the frame with back-to-back singles from Keefe and Musch, but Keefe was thrown out at the plate later in the inning, halting the scoring opportuniy and keeping the contest at 2-0.
The Redhawks blew open the game in the top of the third, as Illinois State's Hannah Meeks blasted a grand slam to extend its lead to 6-0. The Redhawks added a seveth run in the seventh inning with two doubles. The Minutewomen recorded just three hits over the final five innings, with no one reaching further than second base.
Kelsey Blanchette had the loss for the Minutewomen, allowing six runs on five hits, one walk and three strikeouts in 2.1 innings. Hannah Streicher entered in relief, posting one run, one walk five hits and six strikeouts in 4.2 innings. Paige McLeod picked up the victory for the Redhawks, allowing no runs on six hits, one walk and one strikeout in 7.0 innings.
The Minutewomen have a week off before opening conference play against Kent State on Friday, March 13, in Kent, Ohio.
