Softball Drops Eight Inning Battle To Colgate 3-2

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of Massachusetts softball dropped an eight-inning battle against Colgate, 3-2, on Sunday at Debbie & Fred Pruitt Softball Complex. UMass falls to 0-4 overall on the season, while Colgate moves to 2-3 overall.
Riain Keefe and Riley Kairer stared at the plate for the Minutewomen, registering all four Massachusetts hits with two each. Kairer registered a two rbi double in the top of the sixth to plate both UMass runs and added a walk to go a perfect 2-2 from the plate.
After a back-and-forth stalemate to open the first four frames, Kairer singled to center field to record the first hit of the game for either team in the top of the fifth. Tiegan Walsh worked a one-out walk, but Colgate was able to work out of the potential scoring opportunity.
After a two-run blast in the bottom of the fifth from the Raiders, the Minutewomen responded quickly with two runs of their own in the top of the sixth. Keefe beat out and infield single to start the frame before being put out on a fielder's choice. With Katharine Heslin on first, Lily Woodworth was hit by a pitch. Both advanced a base on a passed ball, and Kairer plated both with a double to left center, bringing the score to 2-2.
In the top of the eighth, Keefe singled to lead off the inning but was doubled up on the ensuing at-bat. A UMass groundout ended the frame. Colgate was able to take advantage of a scoring opportunity in the bottom of the inning, claiming a 3-2 walk off victory.
Kelsey Blanchette started on the bump for the Minutewomen, registering four hits, two runs three walks and four strikeouts over five innings of work. Hannah Streicher entered in relief, taking the loss with two hits, one run, three walks and four strikeouts. Colgates Kelcie McGraw secured the win for the Raiders, allowing four hits, one run, one walk and four strikeouts over a full eight innings.
Massachusetts returns to action on Friday, Feb. 13 withs matchup against UPenn and the College of Charleston at 12:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. in Charleston, S.C., for the first games of the Low Country Classic.
