Softball Secures First Victory Of 2026 Campaign Over Charleston

February 13, 2026 | Softball

CHARLESTON, N.C – University of Massachusetts softball split doubleheader contests against UPenn and Charleston on Friday at Softball Stadium at Patriots Point. UPenn earned a 7-5 win in game one of the day, and UMass pulled out a 4-3 victory against the College of Chaleston in the first day of the Low Country Classic.

UMass moves to 1-6 overall on the season.

Massachusetts returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 14 with matchups against Sacred Heart and Chaleston Southern at 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

Game 1
UPenn 7, Massachusetts 5

In a back-and-forth first contest of the day for Massachusetts, the combination of Riley Kairer, Lillie Scheivert, Brooke Musch and Odyssey Torres recorded hits for the Minutewomen, with Torres going a perfect 2-2 from the plate and adding a double. Scheivert and Torres each had one run batted in on the day.

Torres opened the game with a one-out double down the left field line and later advanced to third on a fielder's choice, but the Minutewomen were unable to capitalize on the scoring opportunity in the top of the first.

Penn struck first with two runs in the bottom of the second, with both coming on fielding errors on consecutive plays.  UMass responded quickly, plating two in the top of the third to knot the game at 2-2. Torres worked a walk with two outs, starting a rally that included Eliana Raposo reaching base after being hit by a pitch and Scheivert knocking in Torres with a single. Raposo scored on the ensuing play on a throwing error.

Massachusetts continued to stay hot, taking a 4-2 lead in the top of the fourth. Following another fielding error plating Lily Woodworth, Torres hit a deep fly ball with the bases loaded that moved every runner up one base, including another run.

Penn responded with two runs of its own in the bottom of the frame, with a trio of singles, and later added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth on four hits to take a 7-4 advantage.

The Minutewomen didn't go away easy in the top of the seventh, as Torres singled and latered scored to bring the contest to 7-5 in favor of the Quakers, but the lead was too much to overcome.

Kelsey Blanchette (0-2) had the loss for the Minutewomen, allowing seven runs (five earned) on 10 hits, walking two and striking out three over 5.0 innings. Ainsley Pemberton(1-0) received the win for the Quakers, allowing five runs on as many hits, walked four and struck out four over a full seven innings of work.

Game 2
UMass 4, Charleston 3

In the second game of the day, the Minutewomen offense exploded for nine hits, with Musch going 3-4 from the dish with a double and scoring twice, Torres staying hot with a two-hit performance including a double and Kairer adding a triple. Kairer, Scheivert, Musch and Torres each had a rbi in the contest.

Massachusetts came out of the gates hot in the first inning, racing out to a 2-0 lead. Following Riain Keefe leading off the inning getting on base due to a fielding error and Musch singled in the proceeding at-bat, Torres roped a double to play Keefe. Musch scored on the next at-bat on a fielder's choice from Scheivert.

Charleston responded in the bottom of the frame with a sac fly to bring the contest to 2-1, but UMass tacked on two more in the top of the fourth. Keefe led off the frame with a triple, and Musch drove her in with a double on the next pitch. A Kairer double later in the inning scored Musch and gave the Minutewomen a 4-1 lead.

After a stalemate, Charleston worked consecutive singles with one out, plating one, but the Minutewomen escaped the threat by throwing out a Cougar at third, heading into the final frame with a 4-2 lead. Charleston tacked on another run in the bottom of the seventh, but a flyout to left field ended the contest, 4-3, in favor of the Minutewomen for their first victory of the 2026 campaign.

Hannah Streicher (1-3) had the win for the Minutewomen, allowing three runs (all earned) on nine hits, walking two and striking out two over a full 7.0 innings. Ryley Kutter (2-1) received the loss for the Cougars, allowing four runs on six hits, no walks and struck out three over a full 5.0 innings of work.
