Softball Drops Season Opener Doubleheader Against North Florida

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of Massachusetts softball dropped both doubleheader contests with North Florida on Friday at UNF Softball Complex. UNF earned an 8-0 win in game one of the day, and a 12-6 victory in game two of the River City Leadoff.
UMass opens the season at 0-2 overall on the season, while North Florida moves to 3-0 overall.
Massachusetts returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 7 with another doubleheader against Jacksonville University at 3:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.
Game 1
North Florida 8, Massachusetts 0
In Massachusetts season opener, the trio of Lillie Scheivert, Lily Woodworth and Olivia Packard had one hit each, which included a double from Scheivert. Scheivert, along with Brooke Musch, worked walks in the contest, and Musch swiped her first bag of the season.
North Florida got on the board first in the opening frame taking a 1-0 lead following three consecutive singles. Following a three-inning stalemate for the Massachusetts offense, Scheivert doubled to center field, registering the first hit of the Minutewomen season.
The Ospreys tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Minutewomen rallied in the top of the fifth, as UMass had two runners in scoring position after singles from Woodworth and Packard, but were unable to capitalize.
UNF tacked on three more runs on four hits in the bottom of the frame to enact the run rule, taking an 8-0 victory in the opening game.
Hannah Streicher (0-1) had the loss for the Minutewomen, allowing four runs (two earned) on seven hits, walking two and striking out one over 4.0 innings. Macie Hunolt (1-0) received the win for the Opsreys, allowing no runs on three hits, walked two and struck out four over five innings of work.
Game 2
North Florida 6, Massachusetts 0
In the second leg of the double header, Odyssey Torres notched the sole hit for the Minutewomen. Riain Keefe and Sofia Thormeyer also reached base for UMass, with Keefe reaching on a hit by pitch and Thormeyer working a walk.
North Florida picked up where they left off in game one, notching two runs in the bottom of the opening frame, and picking up three more in the bottom of the fourth to take a 5-0 lead.
The Ospreys notched their sixth run in the bottom of the sixth on the back of a rbi single. Thormeyer gave the Minutewomen life in the seventh working a two-out walk, but a groundout on the following at bat cemented the 6-0 victory for North Florida.
Kelsey Blanchette (0-1) had the loss for the Minutewomen, allowing six runs (four earned) on 10 hits, walking six and striking out five over a full six innings of work. Cameron Ponich (1-0) secured the win for the Ospreys, allowing no runs, one hit and two strikeouts over 4.2 innings.
