Softball Splits Two At Second Day Of Make It Happen Games

Madeira Beach, Fla. –– University of Massachusetts softball split a doubleheader against Monmouth and Bellarmine on Saturday in Madeira Beach, Fla. UMass fell 5-0 in the first game of the day before bouncing back with a 3-0 victory over Bellarmine on the second day of the Make It Happen Games.
UMass moves to 7-11 overall on the season.
Massachusetts returns to action on Sunday, Mar. 1 with a matchup against Illinois State at 11:30 a.m.
Game One
UMass 0, Monmouth 5
In the opening game of the day, Riain Keefe, Brooke Musch, Riley Kairer and Angie Rama each picked up a hit for the Minutewomen, with Odyssey Torres, Olivia Packard and Rama also reaching base picking up walks in the contest. Torres walked a career-high three times.
After Hannah Streicher retired Monmouth in order to open the game, the Minutewomen got off to a fast start in the bottom of the first. Over three consecutive at bats, Musch slapped a one-out single and later stole second, Torres worked her first walk and Kairer loaded the bases with a single of her own. A strikeout and fielders choice ended the inning with Massachusetts unable to take advantage of the scoring opportunity.
After a back-and-forth stalemate, Monmouth struck first in the top of the fourth. The Hawks opened the inning with consecutive singles, and after a popout to the Packard behind the plate, a walk loaded the bases. Monmouth's Gianna Stern roped a double to plate two, and another single later in the inning score Stern, giving the Hawks a 3-0 lead. Monmouth added on in the top of the fifth, as three consecutive two-out hits plated two more for the Hawks to put Monmouth up 5-0 after five.
Although Streicher was able to keep the Hawks from registering another baserunner for the course of the game, the Minutewomen didn't advance a runner past second base in the final three innings, with Monmouth securing a 5-0 shutout victory.
Streicher (3-5) had the loss for the Minutewomen, allowing five runs on nine hits, one walk and three strikeouts in 7.0 innings. Alissa Elimont (2-2) picked up the with for the Hawks, allowing no runs on four hits, five walks and two strikeouts in 7.0 innings.
Game Two
UMass 3, Bellarmine 0
In the second game of the day, a combination of timely hitting and a strong mound performance from Olivia Cutuli led the Minutewomen to a 3-0 shutout victory. Musch starred at the plate for UMass, registering three hits and scoring twice. Kairer added two hits and two RBI's.
The Minutewomen came out of the gates hot in the top of the first inning, with Keefe singling up the middle and Musch reaching on a bunt single to open the game. Torres reached on an error, with Keefe scoring and Musch reaching third. Kairer plated Musch in the following at-bat on a fielders choice to give UMass an early 2-0 lead.
UMass worked two runners into scoring position in the top of the third, as Musch picked up her second single of the afternoon and a Kairer single advanced Musch to third, but the Minutewomen were unable to capitalize.
Massachusetts added a third and final run in the top of the fifth, after another Musch single and a Kairer double to give UMass a 3-0 lead it ultimatley held until the games end.
After allowing a hit in the bottom of the first, Cutuli didn't allow another Knight hit until the sixth inning. Bellarmine worked a one-out single, and after a fly out to Kairer in left field, another single and a wild pitch on the ensuing at bat put two runners in scoring position. Cutuli was able to force a groundout to keep the shutout in tact.
Cutuli (2-1) picked up the win for the Minutewomen, allowing no runs on three hits, two walks and three strikeouts in 7.0 innings. Makenzie Cowburn (0-5) picked up the loss for the Knights, allowing three runs (one earned) on eight hits, no walks and eight strikeouts in 7.0 innings.
