Softball Falls To Bethune-Cookman 6-4

Medeira Beach, Fla. — University of Massachusetts softball fell to Bethune-Cookman, 6-4, in the first game of the Make It Happen Games. UMass falls to 6-10, while the Wildcats improve to 4-14. 

The trio of Olivia Packard, Odyssey Torres and Riley Kairer led the offensive unit for the Minutewomen, each picking up multiple hits. Packard went a perfect 3-3 at the plate with a double and two RBI's, with Torres adding two doubles and Kairer tacking on two singles and an RBI. 

Bethune-Cookman struck first to open the game in the top of the first, scoring on a two-out RBI to right field. Massachusetts responded quickly, knotting the game at one in the bottom of the frame. Torres slapped a two-out double, and Kairer plated Torres on the following at-bat with an infield single.

The Wildcats regained the lead in the top of the third, working three hits and plating two to take a 3-1 lead. 

Brooke Musch walked in the bottom of the third, later stealing second, but was caught trying to swipe third. Torres hit her second double of the day, later stealing third, but the Minutewomen were unable to capitalize. 

Kelsey Blanchette shut down the Wildcats in the top of the fourth, retiring the side, and UMass tallied another run in the bottom of the fourth. Teigan Walsh was hit by a pitch and Packard doubled to right to score Walsh and bring the score to 3-2 in favor of Bethune-Cookman. 

The Wildcats added three more runs in the top of the sixth, working three consecutive walks and back-to-back singles to take a 6-2 lead. 

UMass didn't go down easy, scoring two more runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Minutewomen opened the inning with consecutive walks, before back-to-back singles from Packard and Eliana Raposo scored both runners, bringing the contest to 6-4. It would ultimately be the final runs of the game with the Wildcats securing a 6-4 victory. 

Kelsey Blanchette (1-3) had the loss for the Minutewomen, allowing six runs on six hits, three walks and striking out four in 5.1 innings. Mia Gonzales (1-2) picked up the win for the Wildcats allowing four runs on five hits, walking four and striking out one in 5.0 innings. Malaiyha Galindo had the save, allowing just one hit and striking out one in 1.2 innings of work. 

Massachusetts returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 28 with matchups against Monmouth and Bellarmine at 12:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. in Madeira Beach, Fla. for the second day of the Madeira Beach Classic.
