Softball Drops Final Game Of Joan Joyce Classic To FAU, 5-1

BOCA RATON, Fla. — University of Massachusetts softball fell to Florida Atlantic, 5-1, in the final game of the Joan Joyce Classic at FAU Softball Stadium. UMass falls to 6-9, while the Owls improve to 12-5 and winners of their last six.
Odyssey Torres led the offensive unit for the Minutewomen hitting a solo home run to plate the lone run for UMass. Torres has registered at least one hit in 10 of the 12 games she has played this season. Riain Keefe and Grace Colcucci each added a hit.
Massachusetts got on the board first as Torres hammered a ball to left center, finding the parking lot to give UMass a 1-0 lead.
After a short stalemate, UMass worked three consecutive two-out walks in the bottom of the third to load the bases, but were unable to capitalize as a flyout to left ended the inning. FAU struck in the bottom of the third, plating three to take a 3-1 lead.
The Owls tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Riain Keefe single in the top of the seventh with two outs to give the Minutewomen life, but the game ended on a strikeout.
Hannah Streicher (3-4) had the loss for the Minutewomen, allowing three runs, five hits, four walks and one strikeout in 5.1 innings. Ashlynn Durkin (1-0) took the win for FAU, allowing no hits, four walks and one strikeout in 2.0 innings.
Massachusetts returns to action on Friday, Feb. 27 with matchups against Bethune-Cookman and Siena at 12:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. in Madeira Beach, Fla. for the first games of the Madeira Beach Classic.
