Softball Stuns Kansas As Minutewomen Split Day Two At Joan Joyce Classic

BOCA RATON, Fla. –– University of Massachusetts softball split a doubleheader against Kansas and Southern Indiana on Saturday at FAU Softball Stadium. UMass secured an 8-0 win in the first game of the day before falling to Southern Indiana 4-2 on the second day of the Joan Joyce Classic.
UMass moves to 6-8 overall on the season, winning six of its last eight.
Massachusetts returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 22 with a second matchup against FAU at 11:30 a.m.
Game One
UMass 8, Kansas 0
In the opening game of the day, seven Minutewomen recorded hits and Kelsey Blanchette picked up her first career shutout to hand Massachusetts its sixth victory of the season. The offensive unit was led by Odyssey Torres, who added a base hit to extended her hit streak to nine games, Brooke Musch and Olivia Packard, who had three and two RBIs respectively.
UMass plated the first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning. Lily Woodworth worked a walk to open the inning, but the following two batters went down by way of the K. Teigan Walsh started a two out rally however, starting a stretch of three straight singles and a base clearing double by Musch to put Massachusetts up 4-0. Musch stole third and later scored on a wild pitch to extend the UMass lead to 5-0.
In the following inning, the Minutewomen used two Jayhawk errors and a basehit from Woodworth to tack on two more runs and take a commanding 7-0 lead through three innings.
Consecutive singles from Torres and Riley Kairer in the fourth plated the eighth run for the Minutewomen.
The Jayhawks worked a single in the top of the fifth, but Blanchette continued her dominance on the circle, forcing two groundouts and a fly out to end the game by run-rule, 8-0, in favor of the Minutewomen.
Blanchette (2-4) picked up the first shutout of her early career, securing the victory while allowing only five hits, one hit by pitch and two strikeouts in 5.0 innings. Barber (3-3) had the loss for Kansas, surrendering five runs on four hits, two walks and two strikeouts.
Blanchette's shutout marked the first time this season the Jayhawks have gone scoreless on the diamond.
Game Two
UMass 2, Southern Indiana 4
In the second game of the day, Kairer and Walsh each added two hits, with Musch adding another RBI and Eliana Raposo registering her first Division I RBI.
Southern Indiana got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning with a sacrifice fly giving the Eagles an early 1-0 lead.
UMass responded quickly, as after consecutive walks drawn from Packard and Angie Rama, Raposo roped a base hit into left field, scoring Packard and tying the game at 1-1 in the top of the second.
Southern Indiana tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the the third, working three hits and a walk to plate three runs and take a 4-1 lead after three innings of play.
The Minutewomen cut into the lead in the fifth, as Riain Keefe and started a two-out rally with a base hit. After stealing second during the following at bat, a Musch single scored Keefe and brought the contest to 4-2 in favor of Southern Indiana.
UMass was unable to get the bats going in the sixth and seventh innings, surrendering 4-2.
Olivia Cutuli (1-1) took the loss for the Minutewomen, allowing four runs, three hits, two walks and two strikeouts in 2.0 innings. Hannah Streicher entered in relief, allowing just four hits, one walk, one strikeout and no runs over 4.0 innings. Elly Robbins (1-3) secured the win for the Eagles, allowing seven hits, two runs, two walks and one strikeout through 7.0 innings.
