Softball Splits Two At Day One Of Joan Joyce Classic

February 20, 2026 | Softball

BOCA RATON, Fla. – University of Massachusetts softball split a doubleheader against Villanova and Florida Atlantic on Friday at FAU Softball Stadium. UMass secured a 4-1 win in the first game of the day before falling to FAU by the same score on the first day of the Joan Joyce Classic.

UMass moves to 5-7 overall on the season, winning five of its last six.

Massachusetts returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 21 with two matchups, the first against Kansas at 9:30 a..m, and the second against Southern Indiana at 2:30.

Game One
UMass 4, Villanova 1

In Massachusetts first game of the day, the Minutewomen used a three run eight inning to secure their fifth straight victory. Odyssey Torres continued to be white hot at the plate, racking up two hits and two RBI's, including what proved to be the game winning single. Torres has had multiple hits in five of the last six games. Riley Kairer, Lily Woodworth and Katharine Heslin each added hits for UMass, with Torres, Brooke Musch, Riain Keefe and Brooke Moloney scoring.

Torres got off to a fast start for Massachusetts, slapping a two out single to centerfield in the top of the first. Woodworth added a base hit in the second inning and Heslin tacked on a hit of her own in the third, but the Minutewomen were unable to capitalize.

Villanova struck first in the bottom of the fifth, working consecutive two-out walks before a base hit scored one. Hannah Streicher was able to work out of the jam, striking out the next batter to limit the damage to a 1-0 Villanova lead.

The lead was short lived for the Wildcats, as after Musch and Torres reached on errors to open the sixth inning, with Musch moving to third on the second error, Kairer scored Musch with a sacrifice hit to the pitcher. Consecutive groundouts ended the inning, but UMass entered the bottom of the sixth tied 1-1.

Neither program registered a hit for the following inning and a half, heading into the eighth tied at one.

With Moloney placed on second, Keefe reached on a fielders choice to open the eighth. A Musch sacrifice bunt moved both runners to scoring position, and Torres plated both with her second single of the morning. Kairer doubled on the ensuing at-bat, and Torres later scored on a wild pitch to extend the UMass lead to 4-1.

Villanova had life in the bottom of the inning with the lead off batter reaching on a hit by pitch, but  Streicher struck out the next batter and a 5-4-3 double play cemented Massachusetts fifth consecutive victory.

Streicher (3-3) earned the win for the Minutewomen, allowing just one run on four hits, three walks and six strikeouts in a full 8.0 innings of work. Kat Gallant (0-5) had the loss for the Wildcats, allowing four runs (two earned), five hits, two walks and five strikeouts in 8.0 innings.

Game Two
UMass 1, Florida Atlantic 4

In the second game of the afternoon, the Minutewomen were again led by Torres at the plate, recording another multiple hit game, moving her season total to six games on the season. Woodworth also added two hits, with Keefe knocking one of her own. Torres had the lone RBI of the game for the Minutewomen, securing her 12th of the season and seventh straight game recording at least one.

Woodworth slapped the first hit of the game in the top of the second with a base knock through the infield. An Olivia Packard sac bunt and wild pitch moved Woodworth to third with just one out, but UMass was unable to capitalize with back-to-back strikeouts ending the inning.

The Owls struck first in the bottom of the fourth with a lead off homerun to give Florida Atlantic a 1-0 lead. Massachusetts responded quickly, as Keefe lead off with a single and Musch walked to open the top of the fifth. Torres plated Keefe with a single to center to tie the game at 1-1.

FAU came right back with three runs of its own in the bottom of the fifth, taking a 4-1 lead. The Owls were able to shut down the Minutewomen offense over the following two innings, holding UMass hitless in the sixth and seventh to earn the victory.

Kelsey Blanchette (1-4) took the loss for the Minutewomen, allowing three runs, three hits three walks and one strikeout in 4.0 innings. Streicher entered in relief for Blanchette, registering three hits and one run in 2.0 innings.
Autumn Courtney (4-3) had the win for the Owls, allowing one run, five hits, three walks and nine strikeouts in 6.2 innings. Ainlesy Lambert had the save for FAU, striking out both batters she faced.
