Softball Completes Two Game Sweep On Day Two Of Low Country Classic

CHARLESTON, N.C – University of Massachusetts softball swept doubleheader contests against Sacred Heart and Charleston Southern on Saturday at Softball Stadium at Patriots Point. UMass earned an 11-6 win in game one of the day, and a 8-5 victory against the Chaleston Southern onthe second day of the Low Country Classic.  

UMass moves to 3-6 overall on the season, winning three consecutive contests.  

 Massachusetts returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 15 with another matchup against Sacred Heart at 10:00 a.m. 

Game 1 
UMass 11, Sacred Heart 6 


In the opening game of the day, the Minutewomen used an offensive explosion of 11 runs, nine of which came after the fourth inning, to secure a five-run victory. UMass had seven players with two hits, with Brooke Musch, Odyssey Torres, Riley Kairer and Grace Colucci each having one triple and Torres, Lily Woodworth and Tiegan Walsh adding a double each. Torres added three runs batted in and Kairer totaled two.  

UMass plated the first run of the game in the top of the first inning, as after a one-out triple from Musch and back-to-back walks drawn by Torres and Lilly Scheivert, Kairer singled to score Musch. Riain Keefe extended the Minutewomen lead to 2-0 in the top of the second with a base hit to score Walsh, who doubled in the prior at bat.  

Sacred Heart responded with four runs over the next two innings, taking a 4-2 lead into the fifth inning. The Minutewomen answered right back with four runs of their own in the top of fifth on four hits, with Torres doubling to left center to plate two, Scheivert scoring Torres on the ensuing at bat and Scheivert scoring on an infield ground ball two batters later to take a 6-4 lead.  

Three triples in the top of the sixth, another extra base hit by Walsh and and error in the seventh tacked on five runs for the Massachusetts, to give it a commanding 11-4 run heading into the final frame. A two-run homerun from SHU's Ale Barbera cut the deficit to 11-6, but would ultimately be the last runs the Pioneers scored.  

Hannah Streicher (2-3) took the win for the Minutewomen, allowing six runs (five earned) no walks, 10 hits and six strikeouts in 7.0 innings. Sa Kowalski (1-1) had the loss for the Pioneers, allowing six runs (five earned), nine hits, three walks and four strikeouts in 5.0 innings. 

Game 2 
UMass 8, Charleston Southern 5 


The bats stayed hot for the Minutwomen in their second contest of the day against Charleston Southern, with UMass totaling eight runs on 13 hits. Keefe, and Musch each had three hits, which included Keefe hitting the first Massachusetts homerun of the season. Torres continued her big day with two hits, with Woodworth, Colucci and Olivia Packard chipping in a hit each.  

UMass struck first in the top of the third inning, with a Brooke Moloney working a walk and back-to-back singles from Musch and Torres scoring two runs. The Minutewomen extended their lead to 3-0 in the fifth with Musch hitting a single into left field to score Moloney for the second time on the day.  

Charleston Southern did not go away easy, responding with five runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 5-3 lead. UMass flipped the script in the top of the final frame, with Packard singling and Keefe homering two batters later to tie the contest at 5-5. Massachusetts continued to stay hot, rattling off four consecutive hits to add three more runs taking an 8-5 lead into the bottom of the seventh.  

Kelsey Blanchette was able to produce two groundouts and a flyout to steal the victory from the Buccaneers.  

Blanchette (1-3) took the win for the Minutewomen, allowing five runs (four earned), six hits and one strikeout over a full 7.0 innings. Riley Lauffer (2-1) was handed her first loss of the season, allowing eight runs, 13 hits, two walks and six strikeouts through 6.1 innings.
