Bolton Tallies 400th-Career Strikeout as UMass Splits Doubleheader With Billikens

May 02, 2025 | Softball

AMHERST, Mass. -- Massachusetts (13-33, 5-16 A-10) split Friday's doubleheader against Saint Louis University (30-20, 18-6 A-10), heading into Satruday with a series win on the line. Julianne Bolton put together an impressive performance in the circle for game two, earning her 400th-career strikeout in a winning effort.

The Billikens got the best of UMass in game one, taking a 3-1 victory to kick off the series at Sortino Field. Brooke Musch and Sophia Thormeyer each tallied two hits in the opening game, as Thormeyer brought Musch across home plate off an RBI ground out in the first inning. Lydia Castro singled later in the inning. The Minutewomen would surrender runs in the first, third, and fifth innings, taking on a two-run deficit in the closing moments. Thormeyer and Lily Woodworth advanced into scoring position in the fifth and sixth frames, however stout defending by SLU would close the door on a comeback effort.

Massachusetts flipped the script in game two, scoring three runs in the opening frame to cement the momentum shift. A single by Musch and two walks from Thormeyer and Riley Kairer loaded the bases with zero outs, as an RBI single by Castro tacked on the first run of the inning. Woodworth brought home Kairer on a sacrifice fly, as Castro later reached home plate on a throw to second base. Kairer would score another run in the third, as a sacrifice fly in foul territory by Katharine Heslin extended the UMass lead to four. Back-to-back RBI doubles from Castro and Heslin tallied on two more runs for the Minutewomen, taking a 6-0 lead into the top of the sixth. Runs in the sixth and seventh innings were too little too late for Saint Louis, as Massachusetts closed out the game with a 6-2 victory. Julianne Bolton earned the complete game win for UMass, striking out four batters.
