Softball Splits Doubleheader With George Washington, Fall in Series Finale 2-3

March 22, 2025 | Softball

AMHERST, Mass. -- The Minutewomen (6-20, 1-5 A-10) split their home-opening doubleheader with George Washington (18-10, 5-1 A-10) on Saturday, handing the Revolutionaries their first conference loss of the early 2025 campaign but dropping the series finale on Sunday.

Massachusetts claimed victory in its first home game of the season, taking a 3-1 decision in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader. The Minutewomen struck early, with Odyssey Torres batting in Lily Woodworth and Sophia Thormeyer on an RBI double to open the scoring in the bottom of the first. George Washington would take one back in the third inning on a sacrifice fly, however Thormeyer asnwered with a sacrifice fly of her own to keep the two-run advantage strong after the fourth frame. Julianne Bolton earned the complete game victory, throwing seven innings and striking out six batters on the day. Angie Rama, Lydia Castro, and Riley Kairer also tallied hits for UMass in game one of the sereis.

Despite scoring first yet again in the game two, the Minutewomen would fall just short after taking the Revolutionaries the distance in a 10-inning bout, 6-3. After Riain Keefe and Woodworth rattled off base hits, Castro would bring home one with an RBI single as UMass to an early 1-0 lead in the first. George Washington temporarily equalized in the top of the fourth, however Brooke Musch would score off an error followed by Thormeyer batting in a run to secure a 3-1 lead after the bottom frame. The Revolutionaries would grind out a run in the fifth and sixth innnings to knot the score at 3-3, forcing extra innings as neither side could find a game-winning score. Massachusetts surrendered a three-run innning in the top of the 10th and were unable to equalize in the last at-bats with two on to seal the 6-3 loss.

George Washington would emerge victorious in the series finale on Sunday, despite a valiant comeback effort by UMass. Massachusetts surrendered runs in the first, third, and fourth innings as the Minutewomen trailed 3-0 going into the bottom of the fifth inning. Sarah Keagy got UMass on the board with an RBI double to bring Kairer home from second base. Taylor Richardson pinch ran for Keagy, reaching home after Rama singled into center field to make it a one-run game. Despite the momentum swing following the fifth inning, Massachusetts was unable to find an equalizer in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings.
