Men’s Lacrosse Topples Quinnipiac 19-5 For First Win Of 2025

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse saw 10 different individuals score in a convincing 19-5 win over Quinnipiac at Garber Field on Friday afternoon. The win moves the Gorillas to 1-1 on the year, while the Bobcats begin at 0-1.
Trace Hogan led the way for UMass' offense with eight points on six goals and two assists and two ground balls, the first eight-point performance by a Gorilla since 2021. Matthew Cargiulo contributed two goals and three assists for five points and Aiden Drunsic had four points with a goal and three assists. Freshman Tyler Clayton followed up his three-point debut with another two goals and an assist and classmate Robbie Granara posted his first collegiate hat trick with a team-best five ground balls.
Brendan Coyle won 7 of 10 faceoffs and TJ Casey went 11 for 17 over X. Matthew Petitto contributed two caused turnovers and three ground balls.
The Bobcats began the contest with a 1-0 lead with a Cole Marsala goal at the 9:34 mark before Will Morse tied things up for UMass less than two minutes later. The teams traded goals twice more to sit knotted at 3-3 midway through the second quarter when Hogan picked up his first two tallies of the day to begin a 9-0 run for the Gorillas and capped the scoring stretch with his fourth of the contest with 6:27 to go in the third.
Nate Watson, who finished as the lone Bobcat with multiple points on the day with two goals and two assists, ended the scoring draught for Quinnipiac with 4:28 remaining in the quarter. The gorillas then responded with goals from Cargiulo and Clayton just 31 seconds apart to give UMass its first double-digit lead at 14-4.
Quinnipiac added its fifth and final tally of the day with 1:20 left in the third before the Gorillas ended the game with a 5-0 run.
UMass nearly doubled up the Bobcats in shots, 49-25 and took the ground ball battle, 32-31. The Gorillas were a perfect 15-15 in clear attempts and went 1-for-4 in extra man opportunities.
Freshman Owen Salanger posted 10 saves and three ground balls in his first collegiate win. Goalkeeper Mason Oak finished with 10 ground balls and 17 saves for the Bobcats.
UMass will return to action next Tuesday, February 18, when the squad will play host to Dartmouth at 3 p.m. on Garber Field.
