Balanced Effort Leads Massachusetts Men's Lacrosse Past Dartmouth, 11-7

February 18, 2025 | Men's Lacrosse

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse never trailed en route to its second win of the season, defeating Dartmouth 11-17 on Garber Field on Tuesday afternoon. With the win, the Gorillas move to 2-1 on the season, while the Big Green fall to 1-1.

In a balanced offensive effort, eight players combined for UMass' 11 goals, with freshman Robbie Granara leading the way with three points on two goals and an assist. Aiden Drunsic and Zach Auble had two goals apiece, Trace Hogan, Charles Kurtz and Matthew Cargiulo each contributed a goal and an assist and Blaise New added two assists. Auble and TJ Casey scooped up five ground balls apiece.

For Dartmouth, Tyler Juhlin logged a team-high three points with a goal and an assist, while Colin McGill and Hopper Zappitello registered two goals each.
With the teams deadlocked in a defensive standoff, Matthew Cargiulo finally broke the ice with 4:49 to go in the opening quarter for the lone tally in the frame. That sparked a 5-0 run for UMass as the Gorillas opened the second with four straight tallies before the Big Green ended the half on a three-goal run to close the gap to two at 5-3.

New set up both third quarter goals for UMass to give the Gorillas some breathing room at 7-3 headed into the fourth. After freshman Tyler Clayton opened the final frame with his sixth goal of the season, Dartmouth would draw no closer than three the rest of the way.

With 1:17 remaining in the contest, freshman Will Morse capped the scoring with UMass' first man-down goal since 2018.

The Big Green ended the contest with a 49-37 shot advantage and grabbed 35 ground balls to the Gorillas' 27. UMass went 1-for-2 in extra-man opportunities and Dartmouth was 1-for-4.

Freshman goalkeeper Owen Salanger made 10 saves to improve to 2-0 on the season, while Mason Morel stopped 11 for the Big Green.

UMass will close out its season-opening four-game homestand on Saturday, February 22, when the squad will face NJIT at 12 p.m. on Garber Field.
