UMass kicked off the Fall Season with the three-day host tournament
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts tennis kicked off their Fall Season with the Minutewomen Invitational, concluding on Sunday. The host tournament welcomed four teams in Harvard, Rhode Island, St. John's, and Massachusetts for three action-packed days of competition.
The Minutewomen began play on Friday against Harvard, where they fell 1-6. After garnering the doubles point, the Crimson claimed wins at No. 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6 singles. The lone UMass victory on the day came from senior Mariana Campino, where she defeated Harvard's Angel You 7-6, 7-6 (6) on court No. 5.
On Saturday Massachusetts had a tightly contested match against St. John's, but ultimately fell 3-4. UMass unanimously claimed the doubles point on all three courts, with straight set wins from the pairs of Ella Faessler and Amelia Tye, Thamonpan Jonglertrakul and Mariana Campino, and Mariya Krasakova and Cosima Trinity Calinescu.
In singles play, the Red Storm came back to win singles matches at No. 1, 3, and 4 singles. Jonglertrakul bested Victoria Papadopoulou 6-2, 6-1 on court No. 3, while Campino defeated Buss 6-1, 6-3– lending Massachusetts a tie match. Ultimately the retired match between St. John's Giulia Bizari and Krasakova cemented the Red Storm win.
The final day of the Minutewomen Invitational ended in a 4-3 Massachusetts victory over Rhode Island. UMass began the day with Faessler and Tye's 6-4 win over the Rams' Nikki Fernando and Anastasia Pettersson on court No. 1. Krasakova and Calinescu clinched the doubles point at No. 3 doubles, besting Klara Nelander and Blake Rothchild of Rhode Island, 6-1.
At singles, Tye, Calinescu, and Krasakova all notched straight set victories on their respective courts. Calinescu's win marks her first as a Minutewoman. Rhode Island's Katharina Spieth, Fernando, and No. 6 singles (default) won their singles matches, but UMass' lead proved too detrimental.
Massachusetts looks ahead to the next date on their fall slate at the New England Regionals in Cambridge, Mass. The action starts on Thursday, October 10th through Sunday, October 15th.
