Massachusetts Men's Lacrosse Falls To #20/19 Saint Joseph's, 12-7

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse held a 2-1 lead with less than six minutes to go in the first when #20/19 Saint Joseph's went on a five-goal run, helping the Hawks past the Gorillas, 12-7 on Saturday afternoon at Garber Field. The setback leaves UMass at 5-5 on the season, 1-1 in the Atlantic 10, while Saint Joseph's moves to 7-3 overall and 2-0 in conference action.
Shane O'Leary had a team-high four points on the day for the Gorillas with two goals and two assists, while Mason Bregman scored a pair and Grant Breyo logged a goal and an assist. Caleb Hammett won 8-of-19 faceoffs and had six ground balls and Mike Tobin grabbed four ground balls.
Levi Anderson paced the Hawks' offense with five points on two goals and three assists. Carter Page contributed three goals and an assist and Matt Bohmer finished with a hat trick. Gavin Tygh was 13-for-21 over X with a game-best seven ground balls.
O'Leary opened the scoring at the 8:54 mark of the first only to have Page answer 18 seconds later to knot the score at one. O'Leary then set up Carter Castillo's eighth of the season to put UMass back on top, but Saint Joseph's capped the quarter with Bohmer's buzzer beater with two seconds to go.
The Hawks then began the second with four more tallies to expand the margin to 6-2. O'Leary and Conor Foley brought the Gorillas back within a pair before Jesse Jason added a seventh for Saint Joseph's before the intermission.
Two more goals for the Hawks to begin the third pushed the gap to 9-4 and UMass could draw no closer than three the rest of the way.
Saint Joseph's out-shot the Gorillas, 44-28 on the afternoon and won the ground ball battle, 30-24. Goalkeepers Matt Knote and Tommy Gross both finished with 10 saves apiece.
UMass will next travel to St. Bonaventure on Saturday, April 13 for a 1 p.m. matchup against the Bonnies.
