Minutewomen Offense Explodes For A-10 Doubleheader Sweep at GW

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Massachusetts (15-31, 11-11 A-10) claimed two games in doubleheader action with Atlantic 10 opponent George Washington (24-24, 9-13) on Saturday afternoon at GW Softball Field. 
 
Massachusetts claimed game one of the afternoon, with an impressive 11-5 win to start the day in Washington, D.C. The Minutewomen scored in each of the first two innings, claiming a 6-1 lead going into the top of the third. UMass pushed another two runs across in the top of the fourth, making it an 8-1 Massachusetts advantage. The Revolutionaries were able to generate a rally in the in the fifth and sixth innings, cutting the Massachusetts lead to 8-5. The George Washington run was not enough however as The Minutewomen tacked on three more insurance runs in the top of the seventh, finishing off series-opening victory. Seniors Bella Pantoja and Chloe Whitter led the Minutewomen offensively each going 2-for-3 from the plate with three RBIs. Pantoja and Whittier each tallied two extra-base hits on the day, showing great production out of the top of the lineup. Junior Julianne Bolton earned her seventh win of the season, allowing just X earned runs over a complete game 7.0 innings in the circle. 

The Minutewomen secured a dramatic 13-7 victory in game two of the afternoon thanks to clutch performances up and down the batting order. Massachusetts started where they left off, scoring four runs on three hits in the top of the first inning. Whittier added to the tally, recording her second single of the game, eventually scoring on a wild pitch to make it 5-0 Minutewomen in the top of the second. George Washington responded, as a Maggie Greco home run capped a strong two-inning stretch for the Revolutionaries, making it 5-4 at the end of the fifth inning. The Revolutionaries made it consecutive three-run innings, taking a 7-5 lead into the final frame. Massachusetts came back with a eight-run inning of their own, recording seven hits in the top of the seventh, to secure the 13-7 win. Chloe Whittier once again led Massachusetts at the plate, tallying 2 hits and 2 total runs in game two of the afternoon. Freshman Odyssey Torres continued an effective stretch at designated hitter, totaling two hits and an RBI. Senior Jordyn Graime got on the stat sheet, recording two hits including a two-run double in the first inning.
