March 16, 2024 | Women's Lacrosse

Eight different Minutewomen scored goals in the win, with Kassidy Morris, Skylar Simmonds, and Delaney Rodriguez-Shaw posting hat tricks.

AMHERST, Mass. The University of Massachusetts women's lacrosse team used a stretch of four consecutive goals in the third quarter to take control in an eventual 16-11 win over Saint Joseph's on Saturday at Garber Field. Eight different Minutewomen found the back of the net in the win, with Kassidy Morris, Skylar Simmonds, and Delaney Rodriguez-Shaw each netting hat tricks on the day.

Morris got her day started with the game's opening goal at the 11:42 mark of the second as Fiona McGowan found Morris for her 21st goal of the season. Simmonds netted a first quarter hat trick, giving UMass a 2-0 lead just under six minutes in before adding her second to make it 3-1 with 5:44 remaining in the quarter. Simmonds scored three of the four UMass goals in the frame and completed her hat trick with 3:40 left off an assist from Tessa Shields to bring the score to 4-2 heading to the second.

Ava Connaughton put UMass on top by three goals just 37-seconds into the second quarter before the Hawks followed with a stretch of three unanswered to tie at 5-5 in the final moments of the half. Catrina Tobin posted five first half saves and finished her day with eight in goal for the Minutewomen.

Shields put home her first of two goals to open the scoring at the 10:35 mark of the third quarter, securing a ground ball in front of goal after a Rodriguez-Shaw free position attempt was saved. Rodriguez-Shaw found the back of the net for the first time in the game with 9:02 left in the third to put UMass ahead 7-6 before Saint Joseph's answered back moments later to tie. Tobin came up with a big save on the Hawks' free position attempt with 7:17 to go, keeping the game tied while stopping Saint Joseph's from taking their first lead of the game as UMass never trailed on the day.

Charlotte Wilmoth found the back of the net on a woman-down goal with 4:51 to go, jumpstarting a stretch of four straight goals for the Minutewomen in the third. The senior followed with her second goal less than a minute later off the McGowan assist to stretch the UMass lead to two. Rodriguez-Shaw's second of the game made it a three-goal game with 2:55 left in the third before a behind the back goal by Morris made it an 11-7 game prior to a Hawks goal in the final seconds of the frame.

After Morris found McGowan for a goal with 13:41 to go, Saint Joseph's scored two consecutive in a minute span to pull within a pair at 12-10 with just over 10 minutes remaining. Tobin came up with another stop to halt the Hawks' momentum before goals from Shields, Lauren Tolve, and Rodriguez-Shaw stretched the UMass lead to five goals at 15-10, its largest lead of the day. Morris completed her sixth straight hat trick with the game's final goal with 1:08 to go.

Jordan Dean led UMass on the draw with 13 controls while the Minutewomen finished with a 16-15 advantage in the circle.
