UMass Ties Season-High With 20 Goals In Win At La Salle

Kassidy Morris led the way with four goals for her seventh straight hat trick while Charlotte Wilmoth and Caroline Whelan each added three goals.
AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts women's lacrosse team scored a tied for season-high 20 goals on Wednesday as the Minutewomen cruised to a 20-9 win over La Salle at McCarthy Stadium. Kassidy Morris led UMass with four goals on the way to her seventh consecutive hat trick while Charlotte Wilmoth and Caroline Whelan each added three goals of their own.

Wilmoth opened the scoring 75 seconds into the matchup before Morris and Whelan joined in on the scoring to make it a 3-0 contest with 9:30 to go in the first. After the Explorers pulled within one with two straight goals, Whelan rattled off two consecutive scores to secure her first quarter hat trick. Tessa Shields added the sixth goal for UMass in the frame as the Minutewomen held a 6-3 advantage after one.

The Minutewomen put home five unanswered goals to stretch their lead to eight at 11-3 with 4:39 to go in the second. Fiona McGowan and Lauren Tolve each picked up a pair of assists during the run, with McGowan adding a goal of her own before Morris and Lil Hancock capped off the stretch. The Minutewomen led 11-5 at the break and posted a 23-7 shot advantage and 14-4 draw advantage through the first 30 minutes of action.

Morris scored on the first possession of the second half and added an assist moments later on Hancock's second goal of the day to make it 13-5 with 11:46 to go in the third. Layton Nass recorded her first goal of the season to make it 15-7 with 6:04 remaining before McGowan's fourth assist of the game found Tolve to make it a nine-goal advantage. Delaney Rodriguez-Shaw capped off the third with a goal in the final seconds to push UMass' lead to 10 at 17-7.

Jordan Dean joined 11 different Minutewomen in the goal scoring column with her first of the year just seven seconds into the fourth quarter. Dean added a season-best 19 draw controls for a UMass squad that finished with a 22-9 advantage on the draw. Norah Prizzi scored her first collegiate goal with 3:48 to go before Ava Connaughton became the 12th and final Minutewoman to score a goal on the afternoon with 1:24 to go.

UMass outshot La Salle 40 to 14 on the game with 31-of-40 shots finding the frame. Catrina Tobin logged a pair of saves in the first half while Bridgette Wall finished with two saves in relief in the second half.

The Minutewomen return home to Garber Field for their next two games, beginning with St. Bonaventure on Saturday, March 23 at 12 p.m.
