Massachusetts Men's Lacrosse Rolls To 18-11 Win Over Marist

AMHERST, Mass. – Four Gorillas posted hat tricks to help Massachusetts men's lacrosse roll to an 18-11 victory over Marist on Tuesday afternoon at Garber Field. With the win, its second straight at home, UMass moves to 2-1 on the season, while the Red Foxes (2-1) suffer their first setback of the year.
 
Graduate student Carter Castillo led the Gorillas with a career-high five points, logging his second career hat trick and adding two assists. Senior Shane O'Leary matched his career best with four points as he picked up his second career hat trick and contributed an assist. Graduate student registered his eighth hat trick of his career to go along with an assist for four points. Senior Mason Bregman and graduate student Anthony Sericolo recorded two goals and two assists apiece and junior Caelin Lewis posted his first collegiate hat trick. To wrap up UMass' multi-point scorers, freshman Charles Kurtz collected his first career goal and also dished an assist.
 
Sam Ferrel paced Marist with four points (2g, 2a) and Joshua Balcarcel scored three for the Red Foxes.
 
Marist opened the contest with the first two goals of the afternoon, which came with 13:50 and 12:45 to go in the first quarter. Castillo put UMass on the board 1:57 later off a feed from Sericolo, to kick start a 3-0 run for the Gorillas. The teams traded scores and then the Red Foxes ended the frame with a tally from Christian Colantonio with 47 seconds left on the clock to level things at 4-4.
 
O'Leary gave UMass back a one-goal edge to open the scoring in the second, but Ferrel responded for Marist less than a minute later. Lewis responded a with a tally to put the Gorillas back on top for good, sparking a 6-0 run for Massachusetts that brough the score to 11-6 at the half.
 
Marist opened the third quarter with a pair of goals to trim its deficit to 11-6 then UMass ripped off a 5-0 stretch to end the period on top, 16-7.
 
The Red Foxes scored the first two goals in the fourth and then the teams traded tallies twice in the final 10 minutes of the fast.
 
UMass ended the day with a 44-38 shot advantage and went 1-for-3 in extra man opportunities, while Marist was 0-for-4. The Minutemen edged the Red Foxes in ground balls, 35-34, paced by a career high six for Auble and a career high four for Bregman.
 
Goalkeeper Matt Knote collected seven saves, including his 600th of his career and Noble Smith made 11 stops for Marist.
 
UMass will be back in action on Saturday, February 24, when the squad will play Merrimack at 1 p.m. on Garber Field.
