Minutewomen Drop Pair On Opening Day Of Atlantic 10 Championship

UMass finished its season with a 19-32 record with a 12-12 mark in conference play.
AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts softball team was eliminated from the Atlantic 10 Softball Championship on Wednesday afternoon as they fell to Saint Joseph's and Dayton. The Minutewomen finished their season with a 19-32 overall record with a 12-12 mark in conference play.

Game One - #3 Saint Joseph's 3, #6 UMass 2
Saint Joseph's used a Taylor Marinelli solo home run to lead off the bottom of the seventh to win game one in walk-off fashion, 3-2.

The Minutewomen jumped out to a 2-0 lead through four and a half innings played before the Hawks answered in the bottom half of the fifth. Grace Cadden got UMass going in the third inning with her first of three hits, a single to right field before moving over to third on an Emily Whelan sacrifice bunt that led to a Hawks error.

Bella Pantoja came through with a RBI single through the left side to score Cadden and give UMass a 1-0 lead.

Cadden added a second run for the Minutewomen in the top half of the fifth with a solo shot to center field that hit the top of the wall and went over for the freshman's second collegiate home run. Cadden finished the game 3-for-3 with a RBI and two runs scored.

Jessie DiPasquale got the start in the circle for UMass and settled in after allowing the first two Saint Joseph's runners to reach in the first. The junior followed by retiring the next 13 batters on her way to finishing with seven strikeouts and one earned run allowed.

The Hawks took advantage of two consecutive UMass errors in the fifth, leading to a two-RBI single up the middle that knotted things up at 2-2 through five played.

Game Two - #5 Dayton 4, #6 UMass 2
Dayton used a four-run sixth inning on five hits to rally from down a pair of runs in the elimination game. The Minutewomen took a 2-0 lead heading into the fifth frame, but could not hold on down the stretch.

Pantoja plated the games' first run in the top of the third with a RBI double over the head of the Dayton left fielder to score Kristina Day from third. Pantoja finished game two 2-for-4 at the plate.

UMass added another run in the fourth to take a 2-0 lead after an Amy Smith walk and a Chloe Whittier single put two in scoring position with no outs on the board. Day helped drive in UMass' second and final run with a grounder to the shortstop that turned into an error that allowed Whittier to score.

Julianne Bolton threw all six innings defensively for the Minutewomen and finished with three strikeouts and four runs allowed in the loss.
