#20 Massachusetts Men’s Lacrosse Sees Streak Stopped With 12-9 Loss At Towson

Mike Tobin had a team-high four points for the Gorillas in the setback.

TOWSON, Md. – University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse tied the score at 1-1 with 9:25 remaining in the first quarter, but that would be as close as the squad would come as Towson never trailed in the contest to hand UMass a 12-9 setback on Saturday. The loss leaves the Gorillas at 6-4 on the season, 1-1 in the CAA, while the Tigers improve to 5-6 overall and 2-0 in conference action.
 
Mike Tobin had a team-high four points on the day for UMass on a goal and three assists while collecting four groundballs. Kevin Tobin contributed two goals and an assist and Logan Liljeberg added three points on a goal and two assists and recorded three groundballs. Gabriel Procyk scored twice for his second straight 20-goal season and third of his career, while also corralling five groundballs. Caleb Hammett won 13 of 23 faceoffs and had a team-high nine groundballs in the contest.
 
Austin Stewart opened the scoring for Towson at the 12:09 mark of the first quarter with Matt Weigand responding with the equalizer for the Gorillas from Kevin Tobin at 9:25.
 
The Tigers then followed up by scoring the next three straight to build a 4-1 lead before the teams traded goals for the remainder of the half. Liljeberg scored with 4 seconds left before the intermission to bring UMass within two of Towson at the break.
 
After the Tigers killed off a penalty to begin the second half, Kyle Berkley expanded their lead back out to three at 7-4. Kevin Tobin scored twice in a span of 1 minute, 18 seconds to make it a one-goal game, but Towson went on to net the next four to build a five-goal cushion at 11-6 to help cement the win.
 
The Tigers out-shot UMass 45-39, with the Gorillas leading in shots on goal, 25-24. Towson went 2-for-4 in extra man situations, while limiting Massachusetts to an 0-for-5 day. Goalkeeper Matt Knote registered 12 saves for the Gorillas and Shane Brennan made 16 stops between the pipes for the Tigers.
 
James Avanzato and Berkley combined for six of Towson's goals both recording hat tricks. Avanzato dished two assists and Berkley one, as well.
 
UMass will be back in action next Saturday, April 16, when the squad will host Fairfield at Garber Field at 3:30 p.m.
