Fairfield Rallies Past Massachusetts Men’s Lacrosse, 16-13

Kevin Tobin matched his single-game career high with five goals in in the setback for the Gorillas.
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse built a four-goal lead in the first half, but a 32-minute scoring drought helped Fairfield rally past the Gorillas, 16-13 at Garber Field on Saturday. The loss leaves UMass at 6-5 overall and 1-2 in CAA action, while the Stags improve to 7-5 overall and 2-1 in the CAA.
Kevin Tobin matched his single-game career best with five goals and added an assist as he and Logan Liljeberg (3g, 3a) each had six points in the contest for UMass. Grant Breyo scored twice and chipped in with a helper and Mike Tobin collected three assists. Over X, Caleb Hammett won 21 of 30 faceoffs and had 15 groundballs on the day.
The Gorillas quickly found themselves in a 3-0 hole after Ryan Lancaster netted the first two tallies of the contest for the Stags and Jack McKenna quickly followed with a third, prompting a UMass timeout with 12:59 remaining in the opening quarter.
Massachusetts responded with a goal by Gabriel Procyk to get the squad on the board, sparking a 10-3 run for the Gorillas. That stretch was capped by a pair of man-up tallies from Kevin Tobin to give UMass a 10-6 advantage with 8:52 remaining in the second quarter, the largest lead of the day for the Maroon and White.
However, Fairfield scored the final goal of the half, beginning a 9-0 run for the Stags, which lasted until Kevin Tobin ended the Massachusetts drought with his fourth of the day with 6:50 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Fairfield followed with a man-up goal to push its lead back to five before UMass completed the scoring with goals from Breyo and Kevin Tobin at 5:19 and 3:00, respectively.
The Stags ended the contest with a 48-44 shot advantage and a 33-25 edge in shots on goal. Both squads went 3-for-4 in extra-man opportunities. Matt Knote made a 17 saves for the Gorillas and James Corasaniti had 12 stops for Fairfield.
Mike Drake logged a team-high five goals for the Stags, Bryce Ford contributed four assists, Taylor Strough added a goal and three assists for four points and Dylan Johannes recorded a hat trick.
UMass will return to action on Saturday, April 23, when the squad will travel to Hofstra for a 1 p.m. CAA matchup.
