Baseball Claims 6-4 Victory At Rhode Island

KINGSTON, R.I. – A solo home run from freshman Will MacLean kicked off the scoring for the University of Massachusetts baseball team as the Minutemen defeated University of Rhode Island, 6-4, at Bill Beck Field on Friday afternoon.
MacLean went 2-for-3 on the day, which included his third long ball of the year, and accumulated one run and one RBI. Both Kevin Skagerlind and Drew DeMartino were 3-for-5, as DeMartino registered two doubles and two runs, while Skagerlind had one double and run. DeMartino and Aidan Wilde each added an RBI, with Wilde's RBI coming off a double of his own.
After a scoreless first inning, MacLean crushed the ball over the right center fence to get UMass on the board first in the second frame. Nolan Tichy scored late in the to make it a 2-0 contest off a double through the left side from Wilde.
The Minutemen added to their tally in the top of the third from an RBI double by DeMartino, before the Rams got on the board in the bottom half of the inning on a double laid down the third base line.
In the top of the sixth, a throwing error to allowed Tichy to advance to second in his at bat. Wilde was walked before Cole Hebble reached first on a throwing error, advancing Tichy to home to extend UMass' lead, 4-1. URI brought in two runs in the bottom of the sixth to come back within one at 4-3.
DeMartino came across the plate on a bases loaded double play in the seventh to push the Massachusetts ahead 5-3, before he added the insurance run in the top of the final frame to make it a 6-3 game. The Rams collected one more run in the bottom of the ninth, but the Minutemen came out on top with the 6-4 triumph.
Kevin Dow (6-1) secured the win for UMass, allowing three runs on six hits, one walk and striking out three in six complete innings of work. Zach Clevenger secured his third save of the season, pitching three innings, giving up one run on one hit, walking two and dealing four strikeouts, matching a season best.
Massachusetts prepares for game two of the weekend series with Rhode Island on Saturday, April 16. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. on ESPN+, in Kingston, Rhode Island.
