Massachusetts Baseball Returns To A-10 Action With Trip To Rhode Island

Setting the Scene
The University of Massachusetts baseball team visits Kington, Rhode Island, on Friday, April 15 through Sunday, April 17, to take on Rhode Island for an Atlantic 10 Conference series. The first pitch is set for 3 p.m. on Friday at Bill Beck Field, before a 1 p.m. start on Saturday. The series will end on Sunday beginning at 12 p.m.
The Minutemen are 15-10-1 overall on the season, including 5-1 in the A-10 Conference. URI holds an 8-24 record and a 4-2 record in the conference. The Rams are coming off a 27-1 win at Holy Cross on Wednesday.
Recap in a Minute
UMass scored seven runs in the first inning against UMass Lowell on Wednesday afternoon en route to an 11-4 triumph at Earl Lorden Field.
Cole Hebble went 4-for-5 on the dya, adding two runs and two RBIs. Mike Gervasi followed with a season-high matching three hits, including a season best two doubles, and registered two run and two RBIs, while Drew DeMartino had two hits to go along with two runs of his own Will MacLean, Jacob Sloss and Steve Luttazi contributed two RBIs each, as Sloss recorded a two-run double. Michael Rounds also tallied an RBI double.
Scott LeSieur (2-0) earned the win on the bump for the Minutemen, pitching five complete innings, giving up three runs on seven hits, walking four and striking out four. Jared Henry also entered the game, going three frames, allowing one run on two hits, walking two and dealing a season-high four strikeouts.
All-Time vs. Rhode Island
The Minutemen and Rams will meet for the 193rd time in program history, with UMass holding the 108-84 advantage over URI. The first meeting between the two teams occurred in 1906 when Massachusetts defeated the formerly named R.I.S., 6-2. Massachusetts and Rhode Island competed eight times last season, with the final game being held on May 22, where the Rams won 16-1 in seven innings.
Meet the Minutemen
A solid mix of returners and newcomers compose the 2022 edition of the Minutemen as the squad begins its 139th season. Twenty-seven members of the team are back from the 2021 campaign, while eight players join for their first season in Amherst, including five freshman and three transfers.
It's Going, Going, and It's Gone
The Minutemen have tallied 21 homeruns in 26 games, from nine Minutemen. DeMartino leads the team with six, followed by Steve Luttazi and Hebble with three. Aidan Wilde and Will MacLean tallied two each, while Tichy, Judd, Mike Gervasi and Skagerlind also have one home run apiece.
Luttazi had a stellar first game with two home runs including a grand slam, before earning one in game three at Fairleigh Dickinson, while DeMartino recorded a two-run homer in game one at Fairleigh Dickinson, before adding solo home runs in both game two at Fairleigh Dickinson and the second game at Towson. DeMartino added two long balls in game one versus Saint Joseph's, as well.
[Multi]ple Games
UMass had a strong showing with multi-hit games, as the Minutemen have a total of 70 multi-hit performances. Hebble leads with a production of 15, which included two five-plus hit contests, and Gervasi has nine, while Skagerlind and DeMartino follow with eight, and Judd and MacLean with six. Tichy recorded five, as Sloss, Luttazi and Wilde totaled three, Collin Shapior with two and Chris Pearsons and Michael Rounds have one.
Massachusetts has also contributed a total of 45 multi-RBI games, led by DeMartino with eight, including five two-run contests, two three-RBI and one- five-plus RBI games. Gervasi has contributed seven, bringing in two runs five times, three runs once and four once. Judd has totaled six, while Hebble, Skagerlind and MacLean have four, with Hebble having two three-run games, one two-run and one five-plus. Skagerlind has also tallied a two-RBI, one three-RBI and a four-RBI contest.
On A Roll…
The Minutemen have 15 that are riding a current hitting streak, so far this season. MacLean sits atop the leaderboard on an 11-game hitting streak, followed by Hebble with 10. Luttazi registered a six-game streak, while Shapiro, Tichy and Pearsons are on a two-game streak. Nine other Minutemen are on a one-game hitting streak.
Hebble is also on a 18-game reached base streak, as DeMartino and Skagerlind have 14, followed by MacLean with 12. Tichy and Gervasi are on a 10-game reached base streak, as Sloss and Judd have had nine games.
Keeping it in the Family
The 2022 season marks the 56th straight campaign that Massachusetts baseball will have an alumnus of the Flagship campus as head coach. Fifth-year skipper Matt Reynolds is a double graduate (2005, '10G), and was preceded by fellow alumni Mike Stone '82 (1988-2017) and Dick Bergquist '57 (1967-87).
This is the second longest active streak across Division I baseball. Only BYU (62 consecutive seasons) has been led by an alum of its campus for a longer period.
