Baseball Drops Game Two At Rhode Island, 8-5
April 16, 2022 | Baseball
Minutemen look to take the series in the finale on Sunday.
Cole Hebble went 4-for-4 on the day, hitting both a double and his first triple of the year. Hebble also contributed two runs and one RBI. Nolan Tichy recorded two hits, including a double, and had one run. Drew DeMartino and Dylan Judd had one hit apiece, as DeMartino registered his seventh home run of the season and Judd hit a double. DeMartino and Judd both had one run each, while DeMartino and Kevin Skagerlind tallied an RBI apiece.
Hebble kicked off the game with a lead-off triple, before Skagerlind grounded out, allowing Hebble to cross the plate. DeMartino hit a solo long ball over the center field fence with two outs to extend UMass' lead, 2-0, in the top of the first.
In the bottom of the first, Rhode Island recorded an inside-the-park home run to score three to take the slight 3-2 lead, and added three more runs in the second inning, making it a 6-2 contest.
With DeMartino stepped up to the plate, a wild pitch sent Hebble into scoring position and Skagerlind to second, before a balk advanced the runners, sending Hebble to home to cut the deficit in half, 6-3, in the third. The Minutemen continued to chip away at URI's lead in the fourth, as Judd came across the dish off a wild pitch after reaching third on a previous wild pitch, making it a 6-4 game. Rhode Island collected two runs in the fifth, though, to pull ahead, 8-4.
UMass earned another run, thanks to Hebble's single that brought around Tichy, to rally late in the ninth, but it was not enough, as the Rams claimed an 8-5 win in game two.
Tyler Dalton (1-1) took the loss for Massachusetts, throwing 1.2 innings, and allowing six runs on three hits, walking three and striking out one. Jack Steele entered the game, giving up two runs on five hits, had two walks and dealing six strikeouts in 4.1 innings of work, before Tucker Wittman completed the final two innings, allowing two hits, one walk and recording on strikeout. Domenic Picone (3-3) earned the victory for URI, pitching six complete innings, and giving up four runs, five hits, walking three and striking out 11 batters.
Massachusetts and Rhode Island will battle in the series finale on Sunday, April 17, at 12 p.m.
