Men’s Lacrosse Drops Road Matchup At Boston University, 16-7
February 26, 2022 | Men's Lacrosse
Breyo nets a hat trick for the Gorillas in the setback.
BOSTON – University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse suffered a 16-7 setback to Boston University at Nickerson Field on Saturday afternoon. The loss leaves UMass at 1-2 on the year, while the Terriers move to 3-0.
Grant Breyo led the Gorillas offense with a hat trick and snagged one groundball, while Kevin Tobin dished two assists and picked up two groundballs. Gabriel Procyk chipped in with two goals and registered one groundball.
Timmy Ley paced the Boston University attack with a seven-point afternoon on four goals and three assists and Vince D'Alto followed with six points on three goals and three assists.
BU scored three goals over the first 6 minutes and 24 seconds of the contest to build an early 3-0 advantage. Breyo put UMass on the board at the 6:47 mark of the first, but the Terriers quickly countered to go back up by three before the close of the quarter.
After Boston University opened the scoring in the second, back-to-back goals by Breyo and Procyk just over a minute apart brought UMass back to within two, but that would be as close as the Gorillas would get as the Terriers went on a seven-goal run to pull away.
Caleb Hammett won 10-of-20 faceoffs for the Maroon & White and had four groundballs, while Conor Calderone was 12-for-24 for BU with six groundballs. Matt Knote made 10 saves for UMass and Matt Garber had 10 stops for the Terriers before being relieved by Will Barnes (2 saves).
Boston University edged Massachusetts in shots, 39-35 and led in shots on goal, 26-19. Groundballs were 31-30 in favor of the Gorillas and UMass had 22 turnovers to the Terriers' 18.
Massachusetts was 1-for-2 in extra man situations and BU went 2-for-6.
UMass will return to action next Saturday, March 5, with a 1 p.m. road contest at No. 5/6 Yale.
