Massachusetts Men’s Lacrosse Edged By #12/13 Yale In OT, 13-12

Procyk scored a team-high four goals for the Gorillas in the setback and Mike Tobin added a hat trick.
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Massachusetts men's lacrosse forced an extra period with the final goal of the fourth quarter, but Yale came up with the game winner in the final minute of overtime to edge UMass 13-12 on Saturday afternoon at Reese Stadium. The setback leaves the Gorillas at 1-3 on the year, while the Bulldogs move to 2-1.
Senior Gabriel Procyk led the UMass offense with a four-goal day, while Mike Tobin had his first career hat trick and Shane O'Leary contributed two goals and an assist for a three-point effort. Zack Hochman won 9-of-16 faceoffs and James Caddigan registered a team-high six groundballs.
Yale opened the contest with a 2-1 lead, then Procyk's first tally of the day sparked a four-goal run for UMass, helping the Gorillas build a 5-2 advantage. The Bulldogs fought back to score four of the next five goals and tie things up at 6-6 before O'Leary put Massachusetts back on top by one before the end of the half.
The second half featured four ties and the squads were separated by no more than two goals at any point. Yale went ahead 12-11 on a goal by Brad Sharp at the 5:20 mark of the fourth quarter, but Procyk netted his fourth of the day from Dillon Arrant with 3:13 left for the equalizer that forced the extra frame.
With 39 seconds remaining in the OT period, Matt Brandau connected for the game winner for the Bulldogs and finished the day with a game-high seven points on four goals and three assists. Will Cabrera had a four-point game (2g, 2a) for Yale and Leo Johnson added three points on two goals and an assist.
The Bulldogs led in shots, 58-45, but UMass put 30 on target to Yale's 28 and led in groundballs, 33-24. Yale went 2-for-3 on its extra man opportunities and Massachusetts was 0-for-0. The Maroon & White had 18 turnovers to the Bulldogs' 15.
Matt Knote finished with 15 saves for UMass and Jared Paquette had 18 stops for Yale.
The Gorillas return to action on Tuesday, March 8, beginning at three-game homestand vs. UAlbany at Garber Field at 3 p.m.
