Softball Heads To Texas For Four Games In San Antonio

AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts softball team continues non-conference tournament play this weekend with four games at the Cardinal Invitational in San Antonio, Texas. The Minutewomen open the weekend on Friday at 1:30 p.m. ET against Boise State before taking on UTSAÂ at 7 p.m.
Opening Weekend
The Minutewomen posted a 3-2 record last weekend at the Spartan Invitational and capped off opening weekend with a 5-0 shutout win over Towson on Sunday. UMass also grabbed a pair of wins over N.C. Central before falling to host USC Upstate. The Minutewomen hit .284 as a team over the weekend led by Payge Suggs' .545 average and Chloe Whittier's .533.
Whittier's Weekend
Sophomore outfielder Chloe Whittier hit .533 for the weekend in five starts to lead the Minutewomen with eight hits. Whittier posted three multi-hit games and opened the season with a pair of hits in the win over N.C. Central before recording her first career home run against USC Upstate on Friday afternoon. She closed out the weekend with two hits in each of the final two games and went 2-for-3 with a stolen base and run scored in the 5-0 win over Towson on Sunday.
In The Circle
Jessie DiPasquale led the UMass pitching staff with a 1.93 ERA and a 1-1 record at the Spartan Classic. The junior struck out 14 batters in 14 innings of work and surrendered just three earned runs in two appearances. Jenna Bradley pitched a shutout on Sunday against Towson to record her first win of the season while freshman Julianne Bolton recorded her first collegiate win over N.C. Central on Saturday as she struck out eight in 7.0 innings of work.

Looking Ahead
The Minutewomen are off next weekend and return to action on March 4-6 for five games at the Bulldog Classic in Athens, Ga. UMass wraps up non-conference tournament action on March 11-13 at the USF Tournament in Tampa, Fla. before opening Atlantic 10 play on March 19-20 at Rhode Island.
Welcome Home Coach
This weekend marks the first for the Minutewomen under new head coach Danielle Henderson. Henderson was a three-time All-American, four-time All-Atlantic 10 selection and the only four-time Atlantic 10 Tournament Most Outstanding Player in league history during her time as a player at UMass. The 2009 UMass Hall of Fame inductee led the Minutewomen to four NCAA Regional appearances and a pair of Women's College World Series appearances in 1997 and 1998. Henderson was the associate head coach at UMass in 2014 before taking the head coaching job at UMass Lowell, where she was twice named the America East Coach of the Year.
