Softball Closes Out Weekend With 5-0 Shutout Win Over Towson

Sophomore pitcher Jenna Bradley tossed all seven innings with five strikeouts to secure the shutout win.
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The University of Massachusetts softball team closed out its five-game weekend at the Spartan Classic with a 5-0 shutout win over Towson on Sunday morning. Sophomore Jenna Bradley tossed all seven innings for the Minutewomen (3-2 Overall) and struck out five to pick up the shutout.

Bradley got run support early from the UMass offense as the Minutewomen plated two runs in the bottom of the second for the first runs of the game. Chloe Whittier's first or two hits helped set up an Abby Packard two-out, two-RBI triple to put UMass ahead 2-0. Defensively, the Minutewomen allowed just one hit through the first four innings while Bradley struck out four during the span.

The UMass defense came through in the top of the fifth inning to keep Towson scoreless as Whittier hit Kendra Allen on a cutoff before Allen threw to Amy Smith at home to get the runner out and preserve the shutout. Towson threatened again in the sixth inning with runners on first and second with one out, but Bradley's fifth strikeout and a fly out ended the potential rally.

The Minutewomen extended their lead to five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning with Bella Pantoja hitting a solo shot with one out to right center field. Pantoja finished with a pair of hits and a run scored in four trips to the plate.

Payge Suggs scored on an error following a Kristina Day double prior to an Allen RBI single through the left side for the fifth and final run of the day.

UMass returns to action on Friday against Boise State at 1:30 p.m. in San Antonio, Texas as part of a five-game weekend hosted by Incarnate Word.
